This shot was taken as a submission for a 24-hour photo contest organized by one of the local camera shops.

Shooting conditions were poor for the 24-hour period being very hazy and a bland cloud cover. I shot this not too far from where I live with roughly 2 hours left in the competition.

Wasn't too happy with it and did not consider as being among by better work, but submitted it anyway.

Imagine my surprise when I received a call from the camera shop roughly a week later. They told me that my image finished second and that it would be published in a 2006 calendar benefiting the Children's Trust Fund! This will be my first published photograph.

The composition of this shot is lovely! There's the most amazing feeling of stillness and tranquility.

Thank you for sharing this lovely photo with me on the 'mist' thread on DPC. You must be very proud to know that it will be published in 2006 calendar and that it will benefit the Children's Trust Fund. I'm not in the least suprised that it was chosen - congratulations. Your image portrays a calm and gentle mood and has a very 3D quality to it where those patches of reeds/grasses grow through the water surface.

You have enough deep color and (seeming) sharpness in the fore- and middle-ground plants that it really helps set-off the mood and feel of the foggy background. It seems overwhelmingly middle-tones but actually has a substantial range and contrast. Good job handling a tricky lighting situation. I have a bunch of recent pictures from the Puget Sound area which I wish would turn out as well as this one.

Congratulations -- be sure to post a picture of the printed calendar when it comes out.

Lovely shot, evokes the mood of a lazy, hazy day very well.
