 Selected the bird, inverted selection and adjusted levels on background until it was all black.

if you inverted your perception it could almost look like a strange squid like sea creature

Thanks for explaining... I'm wondering if differences in monitor callibration have an effect here, if anything the selection seems a bit soft to me.

That's both a pretty bird and the name of my music publishing "company," named after the tract in Berkeley where I used to live before the place I'm in now.

Also resembles the logo of a pro photo lab near where I work, Cantoo.

The bird portion of this photo is excellent. I gave it a four, though, because of the background. To me, and as usual I'm in the minority, it's obvious that you selected the bird and adjusted the background. The black edges are too sharp around the bird. If you put this up for a print, I'd suggest softening or blending the edges with the smudge tool or an equivalent technique.

I love the way the blacks blend together and you just have the beak and the white on the bird's neck. Excellent lighting, and a great animal shot. Where's the Fruit Loops? :) 9

This is a beautiful photo with excellent color and composition. I love the use of the black background to draw attention to the bird's bright colors. Really nice job.

Amazingly sharp details. Excellent color and contrast. I wish there was some sort of background to place the bird, so to speak. Right now I see a black background vs some sort of habitat.

As a portrait I miss some light to shape the back of the head, and to emphasise the glint of feathers. For this challenge, I'm not wholly sold on the absence of location. I could imagine it published in a guide, but were I editing I might prefer a similar shot with a sense of place to it. Not a major point perhaps, but significant. Great tonality, especially that eye; depth of field a little shallow? Sense of blurring around the outline of the beak seems odd in this composition.

Wow, great color. I think this shot would have benefited form a little more definition in the body area of the bird. But overall great job!

personally, I just LOVE toucans! And this has great color and detail! The ONLY thing is that I cant see any of the back of his head? But you get an 8 from me anyhow! Send me an original a bit bigger if you could???? I would LOVE to paint this one! emalil me please!

It's a bit freaky how the black of the tucan nearly blends in with the background making it look as if the colored part is all there is. It almost looks like some wierd abstract art made out of exotic fruits. One of my favorites in the challenge. 10
