 a jammer for sunstate roller girls in brisbane, australia

i was out of town visiting friends for a few days and away from my computer so i missed this challenge being announced and just got lucky that i snapped a few pictures at the bout. i shoot derby for my team back home, but that night i was "off duty" so to speak, and was just excited to get to be a "normal" fan and see the game without a lense in front of me (you miss a lot shooting, honestly)

i had one more that i was tossing up entering - its a stronger example of motion panning but i had a head in front of me that kills the composition, and cropping it out... ehh, it just didnt look right to me. im gonna regret not entering it probably, but this was a much better image even with the grain (i didnt have all my gear and the venues tend to be on the darker side)

Greetings from the Critique Club!

I don't know the first thing about roller derby but I do see a good attempt at motion panning. Sadly in a challenge like this people want to see a lot - around 1 second or more to get the full effect. The subject is great, but the effect is more of slight blur than panning. As it stands there is a lot of background clutter. Cropping it so you get in the ref pointing at her and the two refs immediately to her left should help a lot.

With an ISO of 2500 there's no shortage of noise but the lighting conditions pretty much prohibit anything lower. At least you had a fast lens with you, that helps!

Undoubtedly subtle panning, but enough allowed to qualify - grain & colour edit contribute to this marvelous view of a game I can never understand.

Personally I don't see much panning. Another thing That seems off to me is the color. It seems overly yellow and saturated.

Such a great opportunity to really make something shine, especially with the low light. Unfortunately, the high noise (did you use a high ISO and therefore fast shutter?) and lack of visibly panning hurts this.
