Challenge: Emergency! (Expert Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 II USM (Black)
Location: Times Square New York, New York
Date: Apr 14, 2012
Aperture: 5.6

Shutter: 1/50
Date Uploaded: Apr 18, 2012

I took a trip to New York a few days ago and snapped this photo of an ambulance while I was mucking about time square cause I knew about the emergency challenge from viewing doc on my iPod. I also took some tourist photos of the T-Rex they have in the Toys R' Us at Times Square and once I realized the challenge was expert editing I thought It would make a far more interesting entry for the challenge. This is my first time entering expert editing and I hope it does well!

Greetings from the Critique Club :)

Composition:

Love the scene and overall composition, the angle is great and really adds to the theme.

Technicals:

Are good I'm assuming the flat looking foreground is down to the flare from the lights so there's nothing that could be done about that and obviously the whole would not have the "emergency" feel that it achieves without the light being on and the flare adds to that feeling.

Post-Processing:

Is pretty good I think it could have been improved a little by extending the lens flare over the T-Rex as he is behind the flare, also a little noise reduction on the foreground and then some selective sharpening an some burning might have brought out the foreground and balanced the overall image a bit - also as I said in my message during voting I would have loved to see someone added alongside the ambulance running past it with their arms flailing I really think this could have made an even better picture and who knows maybe even got you your first ribbon.

My Opinion:

I like the idea of this shot a lot - I was one of your 7s and thought you would place in the top ten which you did so you definitely hit it with the voters so well done.

Hope this was of some use, should you wish to discuss any part of the critique further please feel free to PM me.

Good luck in future challenges!

Well done! Maybe the opacity of the red smoke is too strong around the ambulance but over all it works well for me.

I liked this image. Reminds me of Jurassic Park. Damn it...now I can't get Goldblum's out of my head.

Nice and creative shame there wasn't someone running alongside the ambulance to create a sense of panic but still nice for the theme. Would have liked a little less grain and a bit more sharpness on the front end of the image if I had to find a nitpick.

I think you did this image a disservice by adding Rex. Would have been a top contender in my opinion, if Rex wasn't there.

Great, well done. Having looked at all the other entries in this challenge I reckon this one will take second place and the red ribbon. 9
