A moment of solitude. Well, not really, as I had a camera in her face, sorta, and there was another guy to the left of me trying to shoot her as well. But she had managed to get away from most of the hordes for a short bit.
They hang on the pier because the fishermen, who catch little juvenile mackerel, feed the fish to the pelicans now and then, even though they're not supposed to.

She is E48, by the way (that's what is on the blue tag.)

Probably one of the best shots I've taken so far this year, I think. Kinda would have liked to see it hit a 6, but I will accept the rating as given.
Other options for this challenge (lest you think I didn't shoot for it):

I didn't vote in the challenge, but in answer to your thread questioning the score, I think this failed to break into the top tier (i.e. above 6) because the bird fills much of the frame and therefore the feeling of being alone is minimized. In other words I think you needed more expanse to accentuate the single pelican. Also I sometimes like the tilted perspective shots, but this one I think would be better with a close to horizontal horizon.
All of that said, if I had voted I probably would have given this a 6, and probably higher in a different challenge. It's a photo to be proud of, for sure. |

I loved this image and gave it a 9 -- hard to believe only one other person did. I ran out of time and didn't comment but I thought it fit the challenge well. It's true that many of the entries were on the sad or depressing side of "alone", but the challenge description said "a feeling of loneliness or solitude" so I had no problem with your interpretation. I love the angle, the detail is great, and you were both obviously up early and taking advantage of the hour. Very nice capture IMO |

I bet her anklets hurt the score a little. Other than that the tile is kind of fun, and the lighting isn't too bad, though it could be a bit better. Could it be the "zoo factor" hurt that much? Dunno... |

It's a beautiful shot Deb. I gave it a 7, because as some said in the thread, she just didn't seem lonely. She actually seems to be doing a happy dance. ;D But it's wonderfully taken, and in a FS I would have given this a 9 or 10.

I didn't vote this challenge, but I can't believe this only pulled a high 5! A very nice perspective and one we don't often see with birds, since they usually fly off when you get this close. |

Wonderful perspective, glorious sky - alone again... naturally. Love this one! |

For some reason the tilted frame makes me feel like I'm part of the image. Like I've just woken up and see this huge pelican watching me. Probably not a helpful comment but that's what comes to mind. Technically this is very good. |

Love the processing. The unlevel horizon actually adds to the image, IMO. Love the pose of the pelican. Great capture! |
