 I worked on this challenge multiple nights. It's so much harder than one first thinks to get an interesting macro, that also has a bit of mystery. I used about 8 different objects for my subject, and finally settled on this image. I just like the way the light hits the ball, the scratches for character, and the depth of field.

Light for this was a single flash with a honeycomb attached. The flash was placed just a bit higher than the ball, and behind it (slightly to the left). This helped highlight the finger hole with a ring of light.

* Decrease black point
* Increase brightness
* Increase contrast and definition
* Increase saturation with lower vibrancy
* Topaz DeNoise
* Export as TIFF
* Resize
* Sharpen Edges
* Save as JPEG

Looks like the holes on a bowling ball. Like the detail at the bottom left of the photo. Nice color and lighting.
