Transportation is something that takes a person from one place to another, so why not.
Notice: Didn't enter and not voting, but I would consider them transportation. |

Yeah, I don't have a problem with those. I think I might feel differently if the challenge were titled "transportation" and the details limited the scope. But with a challenge of P, T, & A, I think those sorts of autos and planes are as much within the scope as photos of toy planes, trains, etc. Anyway, that's my weigh-in. Back to the voting! |

Amen to that! Automobiles are automobiles. What if I said I am only counting blue mini coopers as automobiles in my voting? I would be no worse than some of you guys.

I say ignore the quality of the image , If I haven't been in one, then it isn't a form of train, plane, or John Candy movie. I give it a one. Oh and narrow guage rail cars are out too. |

Is an automobile anything that moves with an engine and has wheels and can travel on a road and something you have to steer? 'Cause I'm getting murdered in the score for not having an "automobile".

Amen to that, again. DPC went through this "does not meet the challenge" phase about 6 months ago, and I thought it had gotten behind us. But here it is again. Open your minds, folks. If the shot has a train, or a plane, or an automobile in it, then it meets the challenge! It's quite simple.
By the way, I did not enter this challenge, so I'm only complaining on behalf of folks like dacrazyrn who are getting beat up over semantics.

I don't use either for transportation, so they must not be transportation. |

CAR FUN FACT
The origin of the word automobile is credited to a 14th Century Italian painter and engineer named Martini. The word comes from the Greek word, "auto," (meaning self) and the Latin word, "mobils," (meaning moving). He never built an automobile, but he did draw plans for a man-powered carriage with four wheels. The word car comes from the Celtic word "carrus," (meaning cart or wagon).
the above is NOT from dictionary.com

There seems to be an ongoing trend of finding, seatching for minut details, real or toherwise, to justify voting low. I dont get it. I cant remember the last time I got a comment based on technique during a challenge. It seems folks are trying to vote low for any reason. I would rather get a comment that says, "I'm voting low bc I entered the challenge" than "you didnt meet the challenge bc your shot was taken on a cloudy day instead of sunny one."
I mean, my abstract challenge shot was a recognisable object but it WAS still an abstract image. Folks just low balled dude! It's just wrong!
Where's the LOVE people?

Furthermore if it has a tram, a glider or a bus in the photograph, try looking at the quality of the shot even if the subject just shades the outside of your take on the subject matter. If the person tried to fulfill the challenge, try to fulfill your role and fairly judge what they shot. If it is a picture of a cat on a windowsill, flame away.

I had intended to use some photos from
Granges Kart Racing
Unfortunately I arrived too late, everyone had left by 4PM.
Sounds like Karts would not have worked very well, and I'm better off without the photos. |

hehehe. Good one!
Why would anyone do this if they are trying to propel their own submission? I didnt realise how much a vote & how one votes mattered as much as it does (recently learned from numerous threads about self-serving voting practices). It's been a sad realisation for me. It's remarkable how much the site can change in such a little time.

I hereby decree that I have personally examined every single shot in the PT&A challenge, and I have found that every one, without exception, contains an adequate representation of either a Plane, a Train, or an Automobile, or a combination of the above. Therefore, every shot in this challenge "meets the challenge."
Now, no one has to worry about it anymore. Every shot is fine. Vote on the picture.

Thanks.
Got the reply I was looking for... and more.
In my view, a submission has to completely ignore the challenge as stated, before I'll score it low on that basis.

Too funny. That means that if I see an awesome shot of a sunset with a beautiful winding road and two tiny barely visible headlights or tail lights somewhere in the shot that I should give its creator the same or better score than equally nice shots of clear airplane, automobile or train studies? Ummm... NO!. Furthermore, the challenge clearly stated that your options are limited to planes, trains, and automobiles. That's pretty clear. But, that's just my worthless opinion, right? I'll vote my way, everyone else will too and, 9.5 times out of 10, the shots deserve the scores they get.

A shot of a car set against an immense landscape as you describe of course would meet the challenge - such an image would be loaded with ideas of the weakness of man's pride in his technology, or of the power of the planet to take car of itself against our attempts to poison it, etc. etc. Ideas of distance and assisted travel would also come into that, ideas of the conquering of nature, and possibly the hubris attendant on that.
Why would you say that the shot you describe would be outside the challenge? Of course, you might not like that approach, or some quality of the shot, but judging merely on the size of one subject in frame seems restrictive to me.
I should add that I didn't submit for exactly the fear of that kind of voting, however.
