I am looking to find some underwater housing for my Rebel XTI. I want to take some shots at the springs close by. And I have only come across housings that are SUPER expensive. If I can't find any reasonably priced I will probably just get a cheap underwater camera.
Anybody know of any housings? I've seen those bags too do they work well? |

I did the same search for 6 months on and off, and nothing ever came up that I would consider a good price. So I switched gears, and looked for something for my wife's point and shoot. Since we plan on using with when we SCUBA dive, the point and shoot idea seemed better anyhow. I found this housing for her camera which is very reasonable:

I realize that it is not an SLR but Canon's powershot D10 works underwater.

Canon D10 at DPReview.com. You wouldn't want to trust your SLR in a housing which costs much less than this anyway ...
PS: The article from which this page is extracted compares the seven underwater P&S cameras available last Summer.

Check out these web sites. They are for plastic bags that are designed for underwater use. If you are not planning on using your camera at more than a couple of feet underwater they work great.

I can highly recommend to get a Canon G11 and its underwater case. The RAW capability is extremely important under water. It makes all the difference even in 2-3 meters depth. The G11 (I have the G10 w. case) has all the dials accessible from the outside with a underwater case and goes up to 30 meters. Its a very high quality build and easy to use. I am very happy with the results. If you get a P&S with a case, the access to the functions of the camera will be much more limited.
I had a 10m underwater P&S before, one of the first ones (Excilim I think) on the market. The issue there is that if the latch on the USB or battery has one 1/2 grain of sand in it, the camera is a brick from only one drop of water. If you have a camera with an extra underwater case, a single drop of water will not ruin the camera, and you can test the case w/o the camera for leaks. Unless the case has a heavy leak, the camera will be fine. You will be warned by bubbles from the case and not by the camera being already dead.
