The gripe is not so much about the low voting, but about the low voting without any explanatory comments to let us know why the voter feels it is lacking.

Honestly, I rarely comment on one I score really low. I mean, what can I say? "I hate that?" "Start over?" LOL If I find something constructive I can say, then I do. It's easier to rave about the ones you love. :)

Exactly, which is why honest feedback from the low voters should be appreciated and they should receive thanks for the efforts.

Ummm...no...To those honest folks who cannot lie to me about the fabulousness of my image, your silence is greatly appreciated...;-)

honestly, when i get those inevitable 1s and 2s i'd personally rather see a "start over" "give up" or maybe even a constructive piece of criticism. it's the silent assassins that are the most frustrating....

Still in the 4's. Both of my current entries seem to be generating "meh" votes.

Same here - Maybe next time I'll have to try for more of a "WOW" factor, or suffer the consequences as I am now. ;-)

browsing through the photos, i'm shocked at how few met the challenge, as per my interpretation of the guideline. the challenge is "branch" but an overwhelming majority of the images have another main subject with a tree/branches showing in the photo. am i misinterpreting this? I know it's an age old debate but isn't the idea to meet the challenge, which is to find an interesting photo of any giving meaning of the word "branch"?

I noticed some of that also Joe, but don't forget that according to the description, there are different kinds of "Branches" to consider also, not just a branch of a tree. "A tree branch, a bank branch, a metaphorical branch. .. [more] This word has many different meanings. Take a photograph relating to one of them."

It's a personal thing as to how precisely you interpret the challenge. Is it DNMC if the branch is just a major element? That is up to you as the voter.

Oh I agree ma'am, I understand the different meanings and voted higher for those who thoguht outside the box on this challenege...

But I found myself voting lower for some beautiful images that are obvious shoe horns of subjects that just happen to have a branch in them...or those that just took full tree shots. Where is the effort to meet the challenge?

Well, for me, how much one meets the challenge, depends on the challenge at hand... For instance, if the challenge is "Wildlife"... and someone shoots a photo of a bird in a cage, then its an obvious DNMC... but for a challenge like this, if the photo has a branch in it, I'm okay with it... If the photo relates somehow to the word branch, I'm okay with that too... I think for me, with this challenge, branches quite honestly, Just aren't that interesting... No matter how you photograph a branch, they really aren't that pleasing to look at... I mean, could you image voting on a challenge with 110 photos of a branch... Now, if you add a bird or a butterfly to a branch, certainly it becomes more interesting, but we only have a week to do this and most of us have full time jobs or kids, which is the same... So there isn't allot of time to try to capture something really unique on a branch, that being said... I am more concerned with the quality of the photo than I am connecting it to the challenge topic on this particular challenge...

I think "major" is a key word here. The entries I'm referring to are ones with a "branch" as a minor element of the composition.

that's the rub, i guess. the key phrase i picked out of this is "on THIS particular challenge" I imagine I'm taking the guideline a little too stringently, likely because i took about 1000 photos this week trying to isolate and find and interesting image of a "branch" instead of just caving in and shooting some nice trees/landscapes.

Oh look it's Detective Constable DNMC! The idea, as I see it, is to use the challenges as inspiration to go out and try to make a good picture. The description doesn't say "Go out and take a picture of a branch AND NOTHING ELSE" If there's a tree in the picture, great. If there's a metaphorical branch, great. If there's a photo of a duck floating upside down in a hard-hat filled with tomato soup then, hey by all means DNMC!

Rate the photos, not how big the damn branches are.

Oh and comment. Even if you only think 'meh' SAY IT.

Joe, I look forward to seeing what category your challenge entry falls into when the voting is finished. Hmmm...Would you be OTB?

I wouldn't say you are taking it too stringently... You are taking it how you interpret it... There is nothing wrong with that, like spiffy said, its up to the voter... I should have added to my first post that how I actually vote for a challenge like this is simple, I don't knock anyone as long as there is a branch or metaphorical relation to it somewhere in the photo... HOWEVER... When I'm done voting, I go back through, and bump the images up that used a branch creatively... That way no one suffers for not meeting the challenge, but those who met it with greater accuracy, get bonus points :)
