I've got clients asking for high-res files on disc all the time. Mostly, I just explain that this would be like selling your negatives, and that I therefore do not do it on principle. However, for some jobs, such as event photography, where you have a lot of prospect clients and the logistics of selling prints are more of a burden, selling high-res files on disc doesn't seem entirely unreasonable to me. I'd much prefer not to do it at all, but with so many people undercutting the market and selling even their top jobs in high-res digital formats, it's tough to compete. What are your thoughts on this?

My initial thought is that clients are getting more demanding and expecting more for their money (weddings in particular) nowadays than they did maybe 10 years ago. With the advent of digital photography, and the subsequent advent of weekend warriors and the Craigslist crowd offering the Earth and stars, as well as wedding photography with a hi-res CD of EVERYTHING, for $50, client's perception of 'value for money' has changed somewhat I feel to the point where some clients expect the hi-res CD to be included in the package price.
I don't include a hi-res CD with my packages. That dicks me out of selling prints after the event. It is like selling negatives as you pointed out and if you lose them, you lose the possibility of making money from them.
Now when it comes to commercial work, I supply the files on a DVD and courier it to the client. The arrangements for usage rights etc would have been worked out prior to the shoot so we both know what will be included on the DVD and the clauses attached to it.
But when it comes to event photography, a group shoot or whatever else, I direct everyone to my website and then Zenfolio takes care of it ;) |
