Say I have an f2.8 18-70mm lens and a lens that is 3.5 -5.6 18-70mm. If I set the latter on 50mm at f4 and the f2.8 lens manually at f4 at 50mm. ....are all things equal at that point or is there something I can learn about lens'? |

Technically all things will be equal like DOF. Depending on the quality of each lens one may produce a softer image at that setting than the other. |

If first lens is f2.8 right through the range, it will most likely be much sharper at f4 than the other lens as it is not at its widest at f4 whilst the other one probably will be. This lens is actually being stopped down a bit. Hope that makes sense. |

There's more to consider than just the lens. Some DSLRs have AF points (generally the center one) that are better with lenses f/2.8 and below.
These better AF points, when used with the right kind of lens, give you more accurate focus and allow you to focus when there's less light. |
