On the B&H website I noticed a couple of deals on a Nikon d5000 refurb and Canon t1i refurb.. Both are good deals IMO, price-wise.. What do you guys think?

I don't have an opinion, but I do know that if you call B&H and actually talk to the people there, they shoot ya pretty straight. They are very knowledgable and will tell you the truth. Sometimes you call for info and they even point you towards a less $$ item that might better suit your needs.
Give 'em a call and ask them about both. :)

I just bought a refurb 50D direct from Canon. So far so good. In many cases they can be something that was returned for no fault of the product. But, as an opened box, they test it and have to sell it as a refurb. I only have a 90 day warranty on mine, however, but for the price I paid, I can live with that.

Refurbished can mean a couple of things. One is that it had some defect and was returned and repaired. Sometimes damage may be merely cosmetic such as a scratch on the body. Another is that it was sold, opened, and returned but not damaged or defective- the buyer may have changed their mind. Since it is opened, it can no longer be sold as new. BH is very reliable but be aware of the shorter warranty period so test it out as soon as you get it. They usually have a rating for the quality on used merchandise to indicate the shape it is in and refurbished should be as good as new. Just watch the return period in case you do need it.
