Oh ok, but you could end up with just a collection of miscellaneous items that aren't even compatible. May want to figure out what brand you want to shoot with, for starters. And as lenses in particular tend to cost a lot, most people expect some pretty good $$$ for their older stuff.

But you may get lucky, some members of this site are incredibly generous.

Do you have any photos at all, taken with a p&s or whatever, that you could put up in your portfolio?

There is a buy/sell section here on DPC for members. You need to buy a membership to post or view it. There are also other sites that are far more active in the Buy/Sell section such as www.fredmiranda.com

You might also want to do a little legwork as was recommended, go out to a camera shop, get together with a local camera club, or contact friends and actually familiarize yourself with what's available and then ask more meaningful questions, i.e.......I like the feel of X camera, does anyone have an older one they'd like to sell?

ETA: FWIW, when I saw the thread title, I just assumed that someone was looking for film cameras. DSLR really doesn't qualifiy as old equipment.

FWIW, in addition to doing stuff along the lines that Jeb suggested, don't be afraid to try out different brands. I shoot Nikon but for the last few weeks have been shooting a borrowed Canon, too. They are probably the two most popular brands, and of course they do the same thing - take pictures - but the feel of them, the layout in terms of buttons/dials/switches is quite different.

Good luck, and if possible, do put up pics in your portfolio.

Well, seeing that I have a lead on a really great wide-angle lens for the Nikon, so I can pretty much take the same kind of shots I was getting with the Canon (with the exception of one really ugly macro, lol)...it's not too worried :-)
