I am going to be taking candid photos at a party with approximatly 500 guests. Most will be teenagers but many parents also. I am one of the invited guests. I have also agreed to takng the candids for a small fee. I plan to post the shots on a website where they can be purchased.
I know that smugmug has a pro package but has some strange "check cutting" options. I'd like to sell them and be paid....not wait until I sell a certian dollar amount. If I sell one or sell 200...so be it.
Does anyone know of another site for such a job? Does anyone else do any work of this sort?
Thanks for your help. |

Is DPC Prints setup for easy upload of 100's of pictures ? I've thrown a few sample pics on there in the past but if I remember correctly it was a one at a time thing. I'll go check it now. Thanks.

I'm not sure Ken. I've only used it for single uploads myself. Thought there was a zip file upload option...
I mentioned it primarily because of the $$$ payment aspect of it. I don't know of anyplace that doesn't have a minimum threshold before making payout.
Someone on here must have an idea or two. Good luck! |

I've been using Exposure Manager for a lot of reasons. They'll payout once you have $100 in sales, or on demand for a service fee. I put almost everything I shoot (kid's activities, PJ assignments, local events, sports, jobs, etc) into an EM gallery somewhere (I have 5 different ones for different situations/clients). |

I'm not really sure what your after but I have used Picasa Web. Just do a bulk resize in photoshop sending all the files to a new folder then upload that folder with Picasa to Picasa Web. Done. I think you can also add a password to a folder that would be needed to view the pics. It doesn't have an order system but simply make the first photo have all the buying details and prices. Advise people to email you with their order etc etc. Maybe this could work for you if that's the type of thing you were meaning that is.

Here's what Smugmug has to say about it...
"We pay profits monthly when they exceed $500, and roll them into the next month's payment if they don't. We pay quarterly for profits of $200 ΓΆ€” or upon request for any amount."
...as you see, they will cut a check by request for any amount owed.

Thanks for all the help...looks like that Smugmug may be the best. I already have the middle package so I may upgrade.

I'm thinking of going with Zenfolio and switching from Digilabs who I currently use.
Digilabs basically suck- they cost the most, take the most commission and their backend admin system is like a relic from the soviet era. I've heard their prints are ok though.
Can you brand the smugmug page with your logo etc? |

You've been using Digilabs and don't know first-hand if their prints are any good or not? |

Something that worked nicely for me at a high school reunion was to make self addressed envelopes available to the guests, with the understanding that mailing $X and including a return address will get the sender a disc with most of the event photos on it at screen size. It was a one time thing, and a low hassle, way for the guests to have a hard copy of the images for a few bucks each. I probably made more that way than I would have by selling images individually because they knew that they would be getting a whole event event photo set at one low price. Everyone was happy with the way it worked.

melon, i love your idea alot. So would you just charge a set fee for coming out and doing the photographs, then the host (or whomever paid for it) will just get the cd for $20 (or whatever price) just like everyone else? Awesome idea - it's a hassle putting them online when guest may look at for fun but not purchase any bc they can't decide what they actually want. hmmm. Add that to the idea book. :D Also- do you all ask the host to set out the envelopes (bc i'm always scared to be too intrusive with their decorations, i went to a multi-million dollar home for a VERY elegant party to do photos, and i didn't want to make anything out of place!) , do you just put them out yourself, or do you just walk around and tell everyone?? |
