I got the sigma 70-300mm lens and I am very pleased. I wnt to get a proper macro lens to photograph small objects like ants, mosquitos etc

I am thinking of the sigma 105mm Af macro. Has anyone got some samples of small objects? Any comments on this lens?

I was looking at the tamron 90mm and allthough good images the lens looks very plasticky to my licking

Sigma 105mm Macro lens bug pics

The Tamron 90mm is also well reviewed. Ditto for the Canon 100mm.

Most of my flower shots here were taken with the Sigma 105mm. Also many of my bird shots. I have used that lens for many things, not just macros.

Zeus66 have you looked at the AF Micro Nikkor 60mm 1.28 D ?

It runs under $400.00 for the OEM Lens.

Do you find the lens a bit quirky for switching from AF to MF? Isn't the AF a bit loud or do you use MF most of the time? I tried one out at a photo show and found the AF rather loud. The clutch mechanism for switching between focusing modes I could get used to.

The Sigma 105mm macro lens is pretty slow to autofocus. It's not particularly noisy by any standard though.

Autofocus is not really an issue for me on macro stuff. I normally manual focus all that stuff because the camera rarely picks an autofocus point that suits my composition. Manual focus is quicker and easier than trying to get the AF to go where you want it.

Jmsetzler, If you are using a Nikon camera, would you rather have the Nikkor lens? And is the 60mm too wide in your opinion? I see all the others using lenses in the 100mm+/- range.

If price is not a stopper, the nikkor lens would be my choice. I purchased the Sigma lens because it was over $100 less than the Canon comparable and the image quality from the lens was as good as the Canon.

I prefer the extra working distance provided by the longer focal length lens. 60mm would be ok but you are going to be much closer to your subject. Being very close sometimes creates lighting problems.

I have had trouble with shadows when I use a flash,
Maybe my needing to get so close to the subject is why I keep scaring the bugs away too :(
I'll look into a macro with a longer focal length.

Thanks for the feedback.

This is a nice lens, I've played with it now several times...

Unfortunetly my big purchases have been curtailed untill my new house is done being built and we've moved in (July some time)!
