So my high school blog has this URL:
//classblogmeister.com/blog.php?blogger_id=201573
not so memorable, and hard to put into publications.
I'd like to buy a domain like www.misterb.com , and have it automatically forward to my above URL. What is the easiest way to go about that? Also, when I've checked some of the domain registration sites, they always offer "privacy registration" or something like that, claiming that it cuts down on spam. Is this something that is actually worthwhile, or is it just an add on that isn't really necessary? |

Privacy registration prevents your (the domain owner) private information from being published during a whois search. |

misterb.com is taken, unfortunately. However, these are available:
misterbremer.com
mrbremer.com
bremerstudents.com
bremerblog.com
These days, virtually every generic (and not so generic) name is already registered, and it usually takes some creative thinking to get a unique name. |

The best way to do this, by the way, is with a third party service like EasyDNS. You'll want web forwarding. |

If you are buying a domain, you'll need a place to host its content. Most hosting services have free WYSIWYG editors. But, if all you want to do is simply redirect, then all you need to do is create the index.html folder with the
But, I would also check with blogmeister to make sure they will allow continuous redirects. Some places do not. There was nothing in the terms of use that seemed to prohibit it, but I would still double check.

Ah..good find Louis. I had mentioned a hosting site because I wasn't sure if he wanted to host his own content, or simply redirect.
So, I'll add that many hosting sites will also have blog scripts available for free. I use inmotionhosting which is an excellent hosting provider. If you do go with them, please let me know.. ;) |

Most of the hosting sites will let you do a redirect more efficiently then a index with a meta redirect.... Just look-up the help for wherever you buy the domain name. |

So I looked into that... and for web forwarding, it appears to be $55 a year... and I'm looking for a cheaper option as what I do now is currently free! |

1. The term is called "parking."
2. NEVER check to see if a name is available yourself. Some hosting company will see that that name is being searched, and buy up the name. |

Parking is simply buying a domain name and not using it. Forwarding is different from that. At one time, Network Solutions used to temporarily register names looked up with their whois service, and abandon them using ICANN's three-day payment grace period loophole. A big no-no and a violation of their contract with ICANN. I don't believe they do that anymore.
Anyway, check your name here. It's safe. |

I have a site. I registered with one name. They the people decided they ALSO wanted to use a slightly different domain name. So I got another domain name, PARKED IT, with my hosting company. You can get to the site thru EITHER name. If someone uses the second name, they are forwarded to the regular site.
Parking doesnt mean unused. |

it's always the damn people messing the internet up. i mean - really - when are they going to figure out the internet is for geeks ?

We the geeks hereby take over all rights to the internet. As such We the geeks will, and can register, and park any domain We see fit. If you would like one of our registered domains simply kill all the geeks in that domain, and take it over.... you may lose limbs, you may lose troops, the ICANN anti-geeks may try to horde your domain. Be strong, have a credit card, and You May Prevail.
