how long does it take to get approved with the first 3 test images and how long do they take to accept the normal images for sale?

All this sounds like the qoute I always heard when going into nursing. Nurses eat their young.
Alot going on in this biz it seems like also
I more or less agree with Ed on this. "Be careful how you value yourself."
If your picture ever shows up somewhere...no one will ever know it is yours. I would like my name attached, so others can come looking for me if they want MORE. They do that?

Looks to me like Istockphoto.com royalty free images are mostly for web-based use which does not compete so much with traditional stock photo agencies that sell for print based purposes.

John is right about the volumn issue. If you can get thousands of downloads of your images then it is worth the effort.

Istockphoto is good in that you can easily see how individual images are doing and who is doing any volumn on their website. Far and away the vast majority of downloads are for business images. (Might be business web site developers have discovered the site) Most of the downloads are for one person's work who has almost 50,000 downloads.

I'd bet most of the royalty free places specialize in business images. It is possible that you could find a market for your images in other areas, but I suspect that most DPC type images would not be hot sellers.

Yeah but with pdc prints you have fools like me that keep coming back for more lol I have already made ya a fortune I think ;)

[quote]I have made about 80 dollars on dpc (I didnt look right now). 80 bucks in 6000+ hits. I'll tell ya in a few months what I'm doing at istock.

F**K half of that is mine lol I have spent probably around $40 give or take lol Although that is before your take.

I've been wondering whether it's acceptable to put the same photos on sale at a site like dreamstime or istockphoto that I have as prints here.

Also has anyone any suggestions as to what I should submit for istock as my sample photos? Would my top scoring photos here be of any use in showing what I'm capable of or do I have to start finding new stuff to show them?

It is probably OK for you to do so, you are not selling the image, just the right to use the image. It is yours to do as you like unless the agency requires exclusive rights.

Submit any QUALITY images and you will likely be accepted. It does not look like they have particularly high standards. Just don't submit snapshots.

Do you participate on more than one stock site? I was wondering, since I haven't seen it in the terms of use on any of these sites, if you can post the same image to multiple sites for royalty free distribution?

I have posted some to Dreamstime but I haven't been 'accepted' to iStockphoto as of yet...

it is acceptable to post to more than one stock site.

One of the FAQ on istockphoto is how it is possible that some images can also be found on other sites, and the answer is that istockphoto does not require exclusivity.

dreamstime is the same.

I started on both recently.

I put some images up on Dreamstime, it is very easy. May not turn out to be much but, like that old Steve Allen song says-- This could be the start of something big.

You would think that the low price stuff, like what sells so cheaply at places like Dreamstime and iStockphoto would be the lower quality photos. Digital has brought tons of new people into photography. It may be that the low cost places pick up good quality images, like the ones that do well here at dpc, simply on the basis of accessibility. The high price marketplace is much more difficult to break into. If I were a pro I wouldn't want to make it easy for new competition to cut into my business, but the barriers may backfire if the buyers realize they can get quality photos at the cheap places. Probably going to be radical changes in the low-end and mid-section of the photography marketplace in the near future.

I have some stuff on dreamstime, but I think that site is relatively new. I'm curious if anyone here who is using dreamstime has sold anything there yet?

That sounds good to me :) I'm still waiting on approval from iStock. Most of my images are not great for 'stock' but maybe a few of them will sell. I also think that a lot of photos that I throw away may have some stock value so I'll have to keep that in mind when i'm editing...

I'm at $20.50 on dreamstime. Most of those sales came during a 3-week timeframe from about 30 of my most popular stock shots that I uploaded in a smaller size than I usually sell them at. So I spent some time this week uploading about 60 more pictures. I figure if I can make an extra $100 or so a month, it will be a nice supplement to my regular stock income.

Freelance photography is a weird buisness. One month it's way up, one month it's way down. I try and find little markets here and there to help even it out. I think dreamstime is going to be good for that.

Question about both of these sites.

It suggests stock images, does that mean straight out of the camera? Can post processing be done to these images(eg levels, blur, b&w conversion)?????????

Thanks in advance.

Hardly worth the effort

Better that than $0.00, sitting idle on my hard-drive I guess. I just passed the test, how long does it take for approval?

initial approval on istockphoto took nearly three weeks, but it looks like they are catching up now. Image approval takes 1-2 days.

dreamstime is smaller scale and fast, approval time 1 day.
