I officially joined club Nikon over the weekend with a shiny new D70 and some glass. As this is my first dSLR I can't compare it to others, but man I don't think I could love it any more than I do. Quick access to every setting I play with, a battery that seems to live forever, and the joy of a functional viewfinder. If only I could take this week off for a photographic honeymoon!!!

I uploaded one of my first shots taken last night on Lake Ontario...

Congratulations ... I am sure it will be a rewarding relationship :-).

BTW, your Lake Ontario photo is gorgeous ... and the camera still says Kodak :-).

I was so psyched to get that image up I missed the drop down box. All fixed now - thanks for pointing it out!

At the same location I took about 10 shots of a great blue heron - even caught him catching a fish. That was my first time using the 70-300 zoom. Yikes! It's harder than it looks to keep one of those suckers steady enough in less than bright light. Great lesson in love for a tripod, but I was bummed to loose the images.

Are you switching to the D70 from Canon? If so, why?

Cghubbell, what camera did you have before? So far do you think your upgrade was worth it, given the price of lenses, etc? I'm thinking about upgrading to the D70.

Although I love my Fuji 602, I kind of miss a true optical view finder, switching lenses on and off the body, manual focus using the ring on the lens, etc. I think that's part of the fun of photography. And especially after playing with my brother's D100 I'm really thinking more and more about upgrading.

I've been lusting after one of those D70's myself. Looks like Nikon hit the nail on the head with that one!

My question is, where did you get your hands on one? Nobody seems to have them in stock.

Here you go: //www.dpreview.com/shop/merchants.asp?id=nikon_d70

The first one, Beach Camera, appears to have it in stock. But, the other dealers on this list don't seem to. They say "Ships In: Call Us", or "Ships in 2+ Weeks", or "When we get shipment in". LOL. Guess it's popular.

might i suggest:

b and h

and hit "notify" this is how i got mine. i would be wary of beach and some of the other internet stores...they are not always reliable.

I'm switching from a Kodak DC4800 digicam which I had the lense kit for (2 macro, wide, 2x tele). That camera took me a long way, and taught me the basics of shooting in manual mode to obtain desired effects (like water blurring in a stream, etc.).

A few things pushed me over the edge. One was the painful delay in start up and between shots. The difficulty of switchign manual settings was annoying. The battery life was abyssmal, and the LCD panel wasn't really fine enough to resolve depth of field issues.

All that being said, and to address your question directly, *YES* it was worth every penny. The size of this camera takes some getting used to after a digicam, but it's amazing how it gets out of my way. I still take some really lousy shots :) But when I know what I want, I find that I can really think about the image I'm composing more than fiddling with the camera. I've also noticed that the image quality feels as though its much much better. I'm not an expert in this area, so it may be subjective.

The lenses were a big investment, as was the flash (I picked up a 300mm Nikor zoom and a SB800 speedlight) but again, it was worth it. This is a much longer term investment than the digicam, and really lets me enjoy photography more by eliminating the annoyances of my last camera.

I am aboard!! Hopefully recieve the cam tomorrow!! WOOHOO!! Just couldn't pass on this deal! Now...recc. for larger glass?
Also..anyone chosen a bag. I want one that is able to go with my backpack (chest/abdomen area). I have looked at online the Roadwired Podzilla and the Tamrac Digital 4 as good contenders. They are not TOO big, and seem to be able to carry a good amount of Junk. any others?

Well, congratulations, i just go my D70 6 days ago.
i have shot now ... some over 3000-3500 Pics. so much joy shooting with this camera... so fast. this is my first one. My sister purchased it in the states... Almost non existant Nikon market here in Iceland. i´m still learning and i need to learn how to maximize the camera... I want to know how to shoot blurred streaming water e.t.c.

i was thinking of taking the rebel for a month... 5 minutes before the purchase i changed my mind ... =) the camera with all acesories, 2 lenses and more... around 2200 $ ... yes, i know... got screwed ... i was just to happy with my camera to be stressing over a few 100$
