Because many people seem to think that DPC owns Joey, that Joey should remain here for the rest of life, and that he should spend time trolling around the forums still. Leaving or having a limited participation in DPC is a personal decision and should be respected as such. Some find it insulting that he returns to sling his products, in spite of the fact that numerous members have found great use in said products.
The Golden Child that everybody felt they nurtured left the nest.
Joey isn't obligated to or owe this community anything. He participated and gave his efforts in the past, which is just as much as anybody in this community does. If members feel they are owed something, they might reconsider why they're here and what makes this community great.

I am not, I am not sure anybody is, there would be no reason that I can think of for anybody to be pissed at him. There are some that express frustration and anger at those of us who happen to think (and state so in the forums) that Joey is an exceptional photographer and business man. Others, with no understanding of free market, vent their anger at the fact that Joey is able to charge and get paid what he charges for his photography and editing tips. Mark Simms' comment is just the ususal sarcasm you would expect from him, I bet he is not angry at Joey either.

I pretty much agree with what you've said, except the above; Joey didn't start this thread, Jutilda did. He didn't even participate in it until just yesterday. He's NOT "slinging his product" in here, he does that on his website.

Fully agree with Bear, I don't think Joey came in the forum to peddle his stuff. His posts speak for themselves.

I doubt Jutilda was thinking about the size of this thread when she posted it. This is bizarre.

My mistake, I hadn't realized it was Simms who said he'd see Joey when he had another product to sell. I thought it was a complaint and passed over it quickly. Regardless, however, he has returned to discuss things that are related to his career (Blog, Workshop, and now this newest release). My point is that he has every right to do this and people shouldn't get all upset about it in the first place because it isn't as though he drops in and says "buy my dvd" every two weeks or is constantly pushing himself here.

I'm amazed he shows up here at ALL with the way some of these folks are ragging on his ass. He just turned 20, but he's shown a heck of a lot more maturity than a number of his elders seem to possess...

Everyone needs a new Ken Rockwell when they get tired of Ken Rockwell.

Ragging on his ass... lol. - the usual exaggerated response from Bear.

However, I would obviously garner a lot less criticism if I took a shit on the altar of a church then wipe my bum with a page from the Quran than if I defile the name of `Our little joey`.

For the record - I think he is a great guy who has a remarkable career already forged in this medium. FWIW, I think we will see documentaries, music videos and even mainstream movies from him in the future if he decides to go down that route. I admire his success and would love to even have a sniff of his success as would a lot of people here, but I don`t RAG on him all the time.. in fact, try to find another post where I even as so much as scoff at his name/comments.

That should keep some of the more bored members of this site busy for a while with the `search forum` facility.

Just so that I'm not misinterpreted here, upon seeing it was you, I assumed you were kidding around/being sarcastic, not that you were legitimately ragging on him. Hence my rescinding.

Heh, yup, I caught that earlier. ;)

It's not you I'm thinking of, actually. You're just "being Simms"... And it's not just this thread I'm thinking of either; this one's actually pretty tame by Joey-bashing standards.

I *DO* think it's pretty funny that *I* have been singled out as an habitual exaggerator, LOL. I can think offhand of half a dozen people who deserve that label and I ain't one of them. In my mind, anyway...

Peace :-)

Its not that people bash him anymore then they would bash anyone else, but its also that he is known here, so people take it personally when he is criticized.

If I came on and said Photographer X is selling this for $250, but I dont think its worth it. People would probably be in agreement for hte most part, but since its one of thier own in this case, they jump to defend, which is cool, as I would be as well. Thats what friends do. I don't fault anyone for it, nor am I surprised when that it is the response. I was a little wierded out by the PROPHET comment though haha.

I don't know if you're following this still, but being about the same age as me I've been able to follow your amazing success (on this site and beyond) since I was about 15, and you've been a pretty constant motivation for me to get out and shoot outside of what I do for school. The amazing amount of skill and knowledge you've gained in the field makes me consistently question my professors and squeeze the most out of my photo-major experience possible.

If you are ever looking for people your age with a decent amount of technical knowledge for assisting, be aware that you have a huge following in the college community. Keep up the good work!

Well, I hear ya, but it's not just the "selling stuff" aspect of it; when a thread was started about Joey's work on "Twilight" that were all sorts of responses along the lines of "what's so special about this?" and so forth. There's this attitude that what Joey does isn't original, as if that's important, that's strongly reminiscent of a slightly evolved "my kid can paint as well as this Picasso guy", ya know?

But it all misses the point, in my opinion. Basically, you can go through life positive, or you can go through life negative. Any energy spent on negative thinking and negative pursuits is wasted energy that can never be recovered. And we see a LOT of that in here, unfortunately, or indeed, *anywhere* on the internet; DPC isn't unique in this regard.

The thing about Joey, he's an unremittingly *positive* sort of guy, and that's why he's done so well. There's a lesson here, for anyone who cares to heed it :-) I don't recall Joey ever running anyone down, not even once. I could be wrong...

He got peeved in his comments once at some jerk constantly reminding him he was "just a kid" or whatever. Or was that elsapo? Can't remember clearly. elsapo... speaking of a young guy with an always-positive attitude, a great disposition, and an excellent photographic skill.

FWIW...I joined the site roughly around the same time there was a forum post, DPC was passing the hat for his first DSLR. Back then I hadn't the foggiest notion about anyone or anything DPC-related and just concentrated on entering challenges.

However, even I *eventually* clued in, and as I've mentioned, I visited his site shortly before his trip to Ethiopia last year. In his bio, at that time, there was no mention of DPC, which I thought puzzling, as by then I had discovered his portfolio and yes, faved a bunch of his pics.

So I am not trying to slag the man by any means, I was simply wondering aloud why he didn't mention DPC on his site. I had no idea some might consider him to be DPC property.

It would be really useful, imho, if someone truly in the know posted a Dummies Guide to Joey Lawrence and DPC forum, so noobs and clueless types like myself have some idea as to the history here.

I'm not sure why he would list DPC on his webiste..... Is that professional ????? What if he also belonged to several other photog webistes while developing his talent.. Wouldn't he then have to mention them all... I mean, really.. DPC can't take responsibility for JoeyL... Do any other hugely successful photog's mention DPC on their websites.. don't think so.

I always thought graphicfunk sent him his first dslr or am I misremembering? Anyway it's something that occurs to me when I think of Joey, the kindness and generosity shown by graphicfunk and his confidence in Joey's talent.

Like I said, I had and still have a very limited understanding as to the nature of the relationship between Joey and DPC. Hard to play catch-up when you don't know how it all began!

You may be right, I could be mistaken. Someone will know for sure.

I think DPC is the only one that clubbed together to buy him a camera.. or am I mistaken on that one?
