So, he should tell you because you are curious? since you are at it, why don't you also ask him how much he paid in taxes? what is his rent? who is his girl friend? and a million of other private questions...jeeez. He already answered you, in a polite and gracious way, leave the guy alone. There is a business section in his sessions dvd, you may find the financial information he is willing to divulge in there

You know what continue to crack me up... I once offered Joey "advice" on his early posts. Now I get brownie points with my daughter because I kind of know the guy that did all those great photographs for Twilight.
Early on in this thread I read a post suggesting that Joey would not share all of his secrets because then we would all be shooting like him. I have no doubt that Joey could/would give away all of his technical secrets and there would be no risk of everybody shooting like Joey. It's not the tools that make him successful, it's how he sees and how he approaches his work. This isn't Joey worship, I'm simply acknowledging that he went from a simple photography beginning here on DPC to being amazing successful in a relatively short amount of time. If this success was due to techniques we can all find on the internet then we all would have done the same. I bought the first DVD to see how he approaches his projects and I found it useful even though I never applied his style of processing to a single image. I'll probably buy the second DVD as well. If I learn one thing that can be applied to earn me more more client, I'm already at a break-even point.

Somewhere sometime he said it was corn syrup with food coloring, that is what I used in this shot and id din't turn out so bad.

Great question. Fake blood was made of a mixture of corn syrup, red food color,water and sugar to thicken. |

I bought the original DVD waaaay back in the day and I have bought both of the two on his website. (I did the package deal the for his two more recent ones) Why did I buy them? Well in short, because I am a junkie for behind the scenes video/info. Also, I feel it's always a great thing to hear advice and info from working professionals, especially ones that you admire. I have no real desire to be a Joey clone. I shoot weddings, not commercial photos. Most of his editing style isn't a good fit for my style of shooting on weddings. But I can still take the photoshop lessons and and lighting info and learn how to apply them to my work. Now when it comes to my personal work, I can see myself using more of his tips, but again, with conforming it to match my tastes and my style.
I have no real desire to go the Ethiopia or some other third world country to photograph either, but I do like to travel some and the advice on travel with gear and all of his perspective having done it is something I wanted to hear. I look at it like this, if Joey were to come to Dallas and hold a workshop, I'd go to it. But since I don't have that opportunity, and it likely won't happen anytime soon (if ever) this is the next best thing. I could have spent the money on another lens or something, but I feel I got some valuable info from all of his DVDs so I don't regret buying them at all. Not to mention I paid for it with money made from shooting. |

hey Joey,
Love your work and have faved many of your pix especially from your days here on dpc. However, was disappointed to see on your website no tip of the hat to the DPC community. This was awhile ago, just as you were setting off for Ethiopia last year. Will you ever acknowledge this site and members as an influence?

I believe I have a recipe posted that is basically cornstarch/red food colouring but with a little bit of soya sauce, to give that old blood look. *going to check* Yep, and used grape drink crystals too to thicken it.
