I was looking for an old contract thread and came across another thread with a link to a link to a link and I found this site called Websiteoutlook. So just out of curiosity I typed in DPC and it says DPC is roughly worth $93549.5 USD
Do you think it's worth more or less?? Langdon would you sell it for that?

That seems a little cheap to me - Don't sell out Langdon!!! I don't want some large corporation owning DPC - it would just go down hill after that - look at all the other social websites and how bad they are now. It's not just websites - can you beleive Disney bought Marvel? What is this world coming to!!! |

DC comics is owned by Warner Bros. It didn't surprise me that Disney bought Marvel, they were always a sugar coated company. I guess every company wants that lump sum at one point or another. |

microsoft.com's estimated worth is about US $142 million.
...and that's just the www.microsoft.com site. live.com is worth about $481.8 million. Bing is worth about $127 million. LiveMail (Hotmail) is worth about $401.5 million. MSDN is worth about $142 million. XBox.com is worth about $4.7 million...that's over a billion dollars right there, with more microsoft properties that I haven't valuated.

Why would he sell? According to websiteoutlook, the site generates about $60K in ad revenue and I would guess there are 1-2 thousand paying members @$25/yr. So figure at least $100K+ per year in revenue.
I don't know what his direct hosting/storage costs are but they cant be that much. It's a mature site, so I would guess it takes very little programming time and most of the day to day heavy lifting is done by a cadre of volunteers.
So in the end, here's a guy a few years out of college with a part time job/business probably netting him $50K+ every year. Again, why would he sell? |

I'm sorry, but I think that this site is accurate at all. According to it, my portfolio website is worth over $800 dollars, and generates revenue from ads (funny, since there are none). |

ok, say langdon is making $60,000 a year profit from this website. I will give him $120,000 to buy the site off of him....and better yet, I would make sure nothing changed. I know a few people that I could definitely get financing from.

The way I understand it the site is like a domain appraiser. There's no way for it to know how much someone would be willing to offer for your site or the ad revenue you take in. What it does know is how much traffic your site generates (more or less). It uses that to determine your domain's value and your potential ad revenue. It's just a simple marketing formula.

Yeah, but you can't sit back on your laurels. Eventually, there will be a similar site with more features (bells and whistles). He'll need to keep this site modern and up-to-date on the latest technologies.
Also, I don't think that he could easily re-use this site or license it to someone else because this is a highly specialized and proprietary format.
Here are my list of upgrades that I think he'll need to survive (or at least keep up) in the long term:
Let me preface this with I know browser add-ons can do a lot, but we shouldn't have to rely on them.
- Create a companion iPhone app. "DPC? Yeah, there's an app for that!"
- Allow personalized avatars
- Rewrite the whole search engine:
. . + Allow searching in the photo's description field (the Photographer's Comments field)
. . + For both forum messages and photographs, allow searching of phrases (enclosed in quotes): e.g. the two words: sunset california should be a different search than "Sunset California", but it's not.
- Stop using personal email messages for PMs. DPC should have its own messaging subsystem for us to manage our messages. It's okay to notify us of a new PM via email, but make that configurable.
- Implement a richer message editor (fonts, colors, etc.)
- From the main page, in the list of forum messages, allow us to choose if we want to see who started the thread, as opposed to who last replied to the thread.
- Create multi-quote functionality when replying to multiple messages
- Having the preview of your message appear in your same browser (no popups)
- Allow geotagged photographs to appear on a map
I have to go now, but I'll add more "missing features" later.

I would like to add to that list
- Ability to add code, html, php, color picker for font, font sizes. (like dgrin.com has)
- Larger image sizes
- More ability to adjust each portfolio
- Photo tagging (like facebook)
- Mobile uploads (like facebook)
- Live chat (like facebook)
- Live running stats (instead of hitting update or F5 to see current score) |

Why would he do that? If as I assume, overall it takes very little of his time on a day to day basis and he has the kind of career/job where he can carve out blocks of time for occasional things like server upgrades, etc., then why would he sell a cash cow for 2 times earnings? |
