I'm sure many DP'ers are pumped up about the new Canon 7D. I have a few questions. Not sure if anyone can answer them. First of all, does anyone know how good (or bad) the sound is? Second, I'm VERY curious how focusing works when the camera is in camcorder mode. With a typical camcorder, it's designed to focus for you and it's easy to record video footage. However, because the 7D (like the 5D Mk II) is using various lenses that are not designed to continually autofocus, I'm really curious how that works. In order to keep something in focus, is it a non-stop struggle to either 1) manually focus all the time, or 2) continually be pressing the button half way (like you would if you were taking still shots) in order to focus????? |

I know the 5d mk2 was manual focus - I am sure the same applies to the 7D. |

you can download the manual from the Canon USA site, I grabbed it the other day...
The one thing I find really annoying is there is STILL NO IR remote but the entry level bodies and the 5DMKII has it :S

That would be awesome. Not sure why they haven't done it yet, as well as a few other features such as more than 3 shot bracketing, and more options for time lapse photos. |

The 7D does have a receiver for RC-1 remotes just like the Rebels. |

Does anyone have a 7D? I know I've seen videos on Vimeo, You Tube and a few other sites that show 7D sample footage. I'm curious how hard it is to focus in video mode. |

I'm not sure of the whole still camera does video thing at all. I would suggest if you really want video, get a video camera, but that's just me. :-) |

How do you guys think 7D will compare against D300....If you had a choice which one would go for? |

I seem to recall a saying, 'When you can't see over the top of the hole, it's time to stop digging!' Same with glass, when you put your hand in your pocket to get some money for a lens and you grab your big toe, it's time to forget the glass:)) |

thanks a lot. The first link is very helpful. 7D appears to have excellent ISO capabilities. |

Huge amount of information! I think I'd need to download the manual and study it for about six months before deciding on purchasing the beast. I will agree that more pixels isn't necessarily good (the first link goes into this a bit). |

Here's a question: Does anyone know when it will start shipping? The best I can find out is "October."
I really want one and I'm growing impatient :-)

Supposedly Canon will start shipping them out next week, though I'm sure it will remain backordered for months as demand outstrips supply. |

Thanks for that ray of sunshine, Shannon.
I can't preorder mine yet because one of my clients still hasn't paid me after 8 weeks. But hopefully next week.

Well the prospect doesn't thrill me either, but consider that the 5D Mark II was released last Summer and still backordered virtually everywhere in late February. |

Are you getting one Shannon? I seem to remember when it was announced you had a bit of a clear out of old equipment. Was that to make a bit of space in the kit bag for a new addition?
I would of thought you might of gone full-frame for your next camera. |

Probably. I've used a full frame camera for years (we have a 5D at the office), but I'm not particularly enamored with it. The high ISO sample photos look pretty darn good on the 7D, and I'd rather have speed, focus accuracy, telephoto reach and an "emergency" pop-up flash for what I shoot. With a 10-22mm lens for wide angle, I just don't have a need for FF. |

Sorry, didn't mean for that to come across sounding snarky. Here's hoping we both get lucky and land one within the first month or two!

I never realized how different the bracketing modes between Canon and Nikon were until now. Interesting. |
