Shadowy photography with low-key lighting, often stark or high contrast, with subjects that are downbeat, hard-bitten, cynical, perhaps menacing. Usually in black and white. See:
AMC Filmsite: Film Noir
Pronunciation: \-'nwär
Think of movies from the 1940's and 1950's such as The Maltese Falcon, Murder My Sweet, Double Indemnity, and Touch of Evil... though strictly speaking, film noir is not a genre, but rather the mood, style, point-of-view, or tone of a film. See:
List of film noir

Yeah, I suggested that a bit ago. I guess there aren't enough fans of it. It is a great idea though. Mostly low key, with some cool lighting. I dig it. |

Many requests (Judy's request someone else's request), unfortunately no action taken :(

The style is noir, film noir; the time is now.

I guess the wrong people dislike it or the wrong people like it.
Maybe if I pretend to trash the idea? |

Originally posted by the right people: Ok, ok, what about just a Noir Challenge? That way people have more options and ideas to shoot (ex. Neo-Noir films like Pulp Fiction, Taxi Driver, LA Confidential, etc.) |

I was gonna say "Low Key is very similar," but then pawdrix proved me wrong. So +1 for the suggestion. Urban Decay entries seem to be attracting a lot of comments, I could see Film Noir entries doing the same. |

I love film noir and a very similar feel in art/photographic terms is 'Chiaruscuro' (Italian for light & dark).
Call it this instead and it is right up there with all the other photographic styles.
