My class assignment this week in Digital photography 1 is to take an interesting and creative image that leaves the viewer with the impression of an image created many years ago. We'll take teh picture in color and then mess with it in Photoshop by making it black and white, than hand coloring it and sepia toning it.

I haven't an idea of what to do though. I can't afford to build a set and buy period clothes to dress someone up in. I also live in central Florida in between Orlando and Tampa, so I don't really know of any old buildings around to take pictures of, plus I have only been here a year so my knowledge of buildings is limited and I can't afford to drive around looking for a building neither.

Does anyone have any ideas for me?

one idea is to find and old junk shop or antique store. Usually you can pick up cheap kitchen ware -- old fashion egg beater and an old chipped bowl. These are the types of things you can usually find for .50 to a buck or two. Do a still life with some eggs, old bowl, beater or just an old wire whisk. antique stores or flea markets or just junk stores can have some wonderful small, cheap things. An old flour tin, old metal cookie cutters...

Have a look around online or get some books on some of the early pioneers such as Julia Margaret Cameron and William Fox Talbot. I'm sure you can find plenty of their photographs online to look at. I'm sure it doesn't all have to bee about period costume or building. Just the style would portray the time. Take this Cameron image for example or this Talbot.

You mentioned hand coloring and that makes me think of Wallace Nutting. All you'd need is a little bit of landscape - there are even has some FL landscapes in this catalogue. If you're bent on taking a picture of a person, just an old style hat and a faraway look in the eye might be enough for a head shot. And flowers, with the right treatment, would work fine too. Good luck!

Whenever I think of this topic the first things which come to mind are old weathered wood and old farm equipment, tractors, etc. Almost anything sepia-toned and/or grainy, and (often) with an oval vignette can have that old-timey feeling ...

get a piece of tinfoil & poke the smallest hole + tape it where your lens attaches
expose for 5-10 sec

find some deserted bridge / stream

voila' period piece with soft focus

It's a bummer that your time frame is limited to this week. Cypress Gardens has the types of settings you could use, and admission is only $5 for both parks this weekend.
There are some nice old houses around some of the lakes in that area that I think that you may be able to get some shots of. Maybe you can find a place where you can shoot a sunset through the cypress trees near a lake or luck up and find an old barn and tractor at a citrus grove to shoot.
If you are interested in the local history, Google "Florida Memory Project" which is the link to the state archives photos and stories. There you can search any place by name or find records about anyone who was around way back when.
Check with the local chamber of commerce, or a relator, and maybe they can tell you where to find a setting or old place that would suit your needs.

Old rusty car body? They always have the vintage feel.
