Gladly my May FS shot crept over the 6 mark during rollover so guess this thread would be in poor taste if it was a rant. Well, its not a rant but I would like some feedback from you guys. There is certainly a decent bell curve in the voting but what I'd like are some good old honest comments as to why this didn't score higher. I've had pm's from folks who think because I am easily recognisable I may have lost a few votes however more people seemed to think the speed voter just thought mirror or even worse photoshop. HotPasta mentioned the over exposed bits on my ear and I left them in as I thought they worked (I didn't 'fix' the colour on the ear either as I thought that might be dodgy ground and remove any trace of it being a single exposure).

Simple set up, just stood in front of the cam in a dark room, set the cam to 1 second exposure with the 580EX flashing twice whilst I 'struck the pose'
Once again, the voters cast their vote and thats final, its just that I thought this would score higher so welcome any constructive critisism :) |

The only thing that struck me about the image was that it was a little coarse. Didn't come up in voting for me, but I can't see giving it any less than a 6. Maybe not enough wow factor? Not sure. I thought my own entry was one of my best and it came in way under yours. Freestudies are tough. I think people expect more, and a 6 in any other challenge becomes a mid 5 for a freestudy. |

Thanks Steve, please don't tell me I have to set fire to myself again for the 'wow' factor lol. |

Well, you were in my top 3 of this challenge, so I don't think I can give any clue. Think it's a brilliant photo. Perhaps it a little over-edited for some people (just guessing) |

I found it freaky and only gave it a 7. It was one of my favorites in the challenge. |

Thanks Henk and yes, you could be right with the editing though apart from the 'eyes' the rest was basic editing.

Technically speaking... the image is pretty cool. Does it appeal to me? Not really.. making humans look freakish is what it is.. I would give it a 5 or 6. I didn't enter or vote on the challenge. |

I think that's exactly the point and the only possible reason why your picture scored so low. It's technically perfect, a clever idea and does have a WOW factor. But this WOW factor is the instinctive reaction of shock or pity seeing siamese brothers. I found it quite hard to "recover" from this first instinctive reaction, therefore it was only a 6 from me. |

I really liked the image, though I didnt vote in this challenge. Deserved a higher score IMO, but the 6+ is still good. I like that it is unique... havent seen something like this before. |

Thanks, its slowly making sense to me ;). That said I shot this for the unusual challenge but felt it was a stong image and do well in the FS - would it have scored the same in the unusual challenge? I have a couple of ideas for similar shots but guess I'll keep those out of challenges ;) |

It probably would have scored worse, since a person is not an object. ;)
That said, I'll admit to being one of your lower voters. I gave it a 5. Yes, it's technically good, but... and it's a big but, I found it repulsive. It just doesn't sit right with me. Maybe it's the Siamese twin thing mentioned above. It just seems so unnatural. |

If a person isn't an object, is that why my bird scored so low? An object is defined as something that is tangible and within the grasp of the senses. That's why people differentiate by saying inanimate objects. So there must be animate objects.
Anyway, Ecce, the picture is technically very good, and impressive--however, I just personally didn't find it very captivating. After I looked at it once, it's not something I'd want to go back to. Sorry... (I feel comfortable saying this because I love a lot of your shots! But this isn't one of them.) |

ROFL! Well, you did get a 9 out of me for beating yourself up! For some reason I didn't vote in any of the challenge's where you set yourself on fire. But I can say that the one with the pepper would have gotten a 10 for sure! |

I looked at this image for a long time before giving it a 5. For some reason it just creeps me out a little bit. Its like the bearded lady in the carnival, hard to look and then harder to look away and then its with a slight nauseous feeling. |

I scored this as a 7 but I think I must be one of the few that liked the fact that it initially creeped me out. I liked the fact that it made me stop and look for awhile and that it sparked an emotion, even if the emotion wasn't the pleasant variety.

I am kinda of surprised by how many people say they scored this photo lower becaus the image repulsed them. I had not re joined the site in time to vote on this, I would have given in an 8. Anytime I am taking in a work of art one of the first things I think about is weather or not the art had an emotional impact on me. If a work of art provokes an emotional response I know the artist has done a good job. |

That's exactly what I've been thinking. What gives? If it's well made, and if it gets a visceral reaction, then doesn't it DESERVE a high score? Or do we only reward flowers and puppy dogs and cute frogs and pretty sunsets here?

Not necessarily. A well made image of someone being murdered would also provoke a visceral reaction, but that doesn't mean I need to like it or score it high. I readily admit I score things based on my reaction. There have been many not so well received images that have received high scores from me, and others that have ribboned that I've scored lower. But keep in perspective that a low vote from me is usually in the 5 range, rarely in the 4 or lower range. |

Farrell, Robt, I think your both on my wavelength here. OK so my dream of a 7+ might have been a little too much but I'm quite upset that my image repulsed people. I did the give the voters what they like in 2008 and want to grow in 2009, maybe dpc nutures fotogs but in order to grow they need to move away from challenges?
At the start of the year I said I don't care about my scores at dpc and just wanted to submit images I'm proud of and went down the lensbaby/pinhole route but to be honest scores do count, especially with an image I'm proud of so I might be better off not submitting the out of the ordinary shot and keep within the dpc nice lovey dovey image?
I should add that I'm not knocking the dpc favourites as I love looking at flowers, landscapes, water drops, asian ladies, frogs etc etc.
All that said I'm probably most proud finishing 152nd out of 162 with this

I loved this shot! LOL!
And please don't take what I said the wrong way. I just wanted to give you an honest answer. Maybe repulsed wasn't quite the right word, but it did make me uneasy. I once went to a freak show at a carnival, and it made me very uneasy. I really didn't look at anything that involved people because to me it felt exploitive and sad. I understand they made the choice to join the carnival, yet, I don't really know how to express what I'm trying to say. Anyway, sorry if I made you feel bad. And, I really don't think a 6+ score is anything to feel bad about anyway. |

You should reshoot with a beautiful woman and see if they're still creeped out? ;)
Personally, I love it. Yeah, it did give me a wee bit of that weird feeling on first glance but, to me, that's a good thing. I definitely score higher on most shots that cause an emotional response. I'm sorry I didn't vote. Forgive me?
(btw, I'm amazed by how symmetrical your face is! Did you know that studies show that's one of the biggest factors in what women find attractive?) |
