3 packs of jello, umpteen million dixie cups, one hour setup for lighting and backdrop and nothing but a mangled blob to photograph. Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone else out there with the same ridiculous notion about jello.
Guess what's for dessert for the rest of the week. |

Did you try coating them with veggie oil, or something else like that? Sometimes that will help them slide out. Don't use a lot, or it will look slimy.
Thanks for the message. I was thinking of jell-o too. |

Don't feel bad Lisa. I have never in my life made Jello that actually jelled. My friends joke that I think Jello is a beverage.

The traditional unmolding technique is to dip the mold into hot water for a few seconds to "melt" the Jello at the surface -- it should slide out cleanly then. An alternative to oiling the molds is to use a non-stick cooking spray product.
You can also make the Jello more concentrated than the package directions and/or add extra unflavored gelatin to make it stiffer.
Or you can get agar-agar from a scientific supply house -- it stays jelled at warmer temperatures. |

Definitely use agar-agar. It's made from seaweed. Do you know what gelatine is? Blech!
Even if I wasn't a vegan I'd steer away from that stuff. |

Ya'll don't watch Martha Stewart. She had the answer to this age old problem on her show years ago. Run the flame of a torch under the bottom of your molding pan for a minute...your jello will come out perfectly. Gawd, I'm almost embarrassed that I know the answer to this since I've never made a jello mold in my entire 23 years on earth.

I wouldn't advise doing this if your 'molding pan' is a dixie cup :-)

Of course Martha was probably inspired by seeing Julia Child's blowtorch technique for perfect Baked Alaska (cake/ice cream base with browned meringue coating). Which I've never made in 45 years of cooking... |

I bet it would still work -- the Jello should melt before the paper reaches combustion temperature. Just keep the torch flame in constant motion for 2-10 seconds... |

Don't dixie cups usually have that wax coating on them though?

Use shot glasses... the glass kind... :) then put the jello in the freezer for about 10 minutes and it will pop right out...

I figured out how to remedy the problem about 5 minutes after I posted...figures. I dipped the cups in hot water and voila-the jello slid right out. I might try the torch next time. I bet I could get great photos of my house burning down.
Hope you guys are having good luck on next weeks challenge!

You should wait for the 'burning houses' challenge for that, though.

I'm sure these days they're probably coated with some toxic petroleum derivative. The hot-water dip would be my first choice for sure... |

Yet another ridiculous FYI regarding jello. Don't ever leave it outside unattended (not even for a few minutes)...moths will pounce on it in broad daylight to lay their eggs. Gross...the picture's kind of cool though. :P
The jello saga continues... |

And more:
When allowed to gel in the fridge for several days, jello can sit at room temperature for over a week and never "melt." It will also begin to grow lovely white plants. I don't know what happens after a week, my husband made me through it out. I knew I should have left it longer. Then I could have made a truly useful statement here. :-)

My obsession with this site has my boyfriend worried ;) He saw me in the kitchen playing with stuff for this newest challenge.... lets just say I was melting things with a lighter ;)
Granted, he left the room saying "Just don't burn the apartment down".. so I guess I have clearance to be crazy, just ya know, minor restrictions.
Off to play with more things! - Jen

Moth larvae congealed salad. Now that is an interesting image. Not very appetizing though. |

Now that's getting interesting. If you could catch a moth laying an egg you would definitely get a 10 from me.
