Hey MPMCGEEHAN
About my poor effort. You're right, that wasn't me. I thought I didn't have anything worth posting so I ended up taking that shot. That is my sister and her dog in the photo. It is a perfect example of getting caught up in the moment and allowing others to influence your decision. The funny thing is that in the process I completely forgot about another completely different shot that I had taken much earlier in the week that would have been much better. Oh well. And as for the city life shot I took a bunch that didn't really do it for me and then when I finally had a great idea and was on my way to take the shots a friend invited me to go out on Lake Washington in his speed boat. I certainly couldn't turn that down and so I wasn't even at home to try to submit anything. But I'll be back. It will suck having to sit this one out. I've got a couple of great ideas already for this current challenge. I absolutely love this camera. I feel like I can do anything with it. I even ordered a 1.8x telecoverter for it. I can't wait to try that. I'll have a 350mm zoom to play with.
Thanks for your compliments, I like your photos as well.
Tim

I don't really have a problem with your message or anything, but if you are really just writing to one specific person then why don't you just send him a personal message? In fact, why don't you e-mail him directly since he posted his e-mail address in his profile. To e-mail him just click on his e-mail address, this will open up a new message in your e-mail program. If you want to send him a personal message just click on the "PM" next to his e-mail address.

Yes, I thought about that and I probably should have in retrospect. He initial asked me a question openly in another thread which was then closed so I just thought I would respond openly in a new thread in case others wanted to read it as well. Apparently not.

I thought your post was very interesting, Tim and I thank you for sharing. I'm also impressed with your past photos and welcome any of your postings, regardless of who they were "addressed" to. And I also have a Sony DSC-F707 and I'm hoping my first photo that I submit will live up to half of your talent.

Thanks RV and I'm sure you will do just fine with the camera. I partly wanted to share that because I think there are some people here that have the same camera that would be intersted in finding out how well teleconverters work on it. I plan on sharing that with you when it arrives and I have had a chance to test it. The Brand is Raynox DCR-1850pro in case anyone has any experience with it I would also be interested.
Boy, that was funny reading that other thread. It's funny how much more serious something can be interpreted in text. I learned by now to assume the person on the other end is probably writing things in fun.
Have fun with your camera and I will be looking for your photos, RV.

Tim, Oh Tim, oh Tim! Forgive my ignorance, but what the heck is this teleconverter thing and what is it going to do for you and your camera?

Hi Tim!
Thanks for getting back to me this way since we couldn''t continue anymore discussion in yesterday''s thread. And please don''t think that I was disrespecting your work in any way with my comment (even though some on here tried to suggest that). I was merely pointing out what you just confirmed, that your shadow photo was not in the same caliber as your previous submissions. I almost submitted a city life photo "just to get one in" but changed my mind because it, well, sucked. Rvicente said it best when he said that, having the same camera as you do (and I do), he hopes that he can take photos that are nearly half as good as yours. I feel the same way. You''ve inspired me to be more creative with this $1000 piece of digital equipment I own. I can''t wait to see your pics with that teleconverter!

Rv. No problem. It goes by many names. Telephoto extender, tele-extender, telephoto converter, or teleconverter. It is simply a multiplying lense which is added to your regular lens to gain more telephoto ability. Often with film SLRs this lens is placed between the main lens and the camera body. But with most digitals where the lenses are permanent the teleconverter is made to attach to the front of your existing lens. In the case of the Raynox lens I talked about it is labeled as 1.85x. This means it will increase my zoom range from 190mm to about 351mm (35mm equiv.) They are not all compatible with every digital camera, however. That's why I am a little apprehensive about it. Even if the threads match and they fit perfectly on the camera because many of the CCD sensors are different enough that some lenses can actually produce color aberations in the photo, sort of making the image look like a badly aligned rear projection tv. I also read that your F-stop setting can affect this as well. It has been suggested that by using F-stops between F5.6 and F8.0 on the Sony F707 This particular Raynox teleconvertor will produce the best results. Whew!! I sure hope that made sense. Let me know if you have any more questions and I can try to answer them for you.

DSC-F707's Rule!!
Oops, better not say that too loud around here.
Tim, I too would be interested in hearing how the teleconverter affects image quality. My experence many years ago with converter lenses was not acceptable. Do you hace a wide angle converter?

No wide angle converter yet. Financially, I probably shouldn't have purchased the teleconverter. But I'm not that smart financially and I know I will get a lot of use from it. I tried one of Canon's teleconverters and it showed pretty bad color aberations so I returned it. I didn't know at the time to try experimenting with different F-stops. That may have worked. With this Raynox lens I saw several examples where it was used on the F707, they looked very good and that is what convinced me to purchase it. Great! Now you've got me thinking about the wide angle converter again and I just can't do it yet, aaarrrggg..........

Tim,
Keep me in the loop on your results with the teleconverter... I may also be interested in one of those for my F707.
I'm gonna buy a $30 external flash unit for my F707 on my way home from work this evening... Ritz Camera has a SunPak Digital Camera flash that I want to try out. I looked at it the other day and hesitated, but I think I'm gonna give it a try. The sony unit is $119 and I probalby should just buy that but for $30, I'll see how this one works. It will give me the ability to bounce flash, but the cable is only 12" long so I will have to see if I can fabricate a longer cord for some off camera flash work...

I don't think this is the right place to ask, but alot of DSC f707 owners seem here right now :) You all seem pretty happy, any downside (aside from the sticker price) that I should know about before I start hunting for prices?
Thanks. |

Two things. The four way style button is difficult to press the middle button and the red eye reduction is buried in a menue and not part of the flash option where it ought to be. These are minor compared to what the camera is capable of. I also bought Sony's dedicated flash and am very happy with it. To be able to bounce the flash off the ceiling makes it ideal for portraiture. It eliminates the red eye and creates more naturalistic shadows when used in conjuction with some natural side light from a window.
