Judi I had no idea this was your entry when I voted and commented. I try not to guess who's is who when voting and commenting. From my comment you can tell I liked it. I voted it a 9 and fully believe it should have finished higher than where it did.

My gripe is that I voted on every photo in this challenge and my votes did not show on the photos after the contest ended.

Yes they did. Read two posts up.

For all those who are mad about your votes and comments no showing, they are! Go to each individual photo you voted and commented on and certainly you'll find them there...
I'm not sure, but looking on how the site was crawling last night after rollover I guess this has to do with some fluke with the database.

Overall, I guess I could say that I am disappointing with the result... thought this would do better. I didnt expect to ribbon mind you, but I thought I would get above 6.

But then, considering that there were 1100+ entries, and only 10 scored above 7, it shows that a lot of voters lumped the majority of shots into their 'average' range of votes, which for some people is as low as three.

At the end of the day, I like my shot, just not the result :)

It's obvious to me that i have no idea of what good photography is all about as my comment on your image is the only one that is not positive and i only gave you a 4. Everybody else has only praise so somewhere I am missing something. I was very honest though just as i am being now.
My own entry did only a little better then yours with place 617.

No worries... and I am sure you know what good photography is.... everyone has a different view of what is good. I appreciated your honesty when you left the comment, and your honesty in the forum. And, all the low voters (3 or less), either didnt comment at all, or left a nice comment, and voted low anyway.

I can dig it-but that was the only gripe I had. I loved this contest because it fed my obsession with looking at so many photos.

I wasn't expecting to ribbon, but I really hoped this image would score much higher than some of my other challenge entries so that it would show up on my profile page:

I wondered if maybe some of those that voted it lower than average might have needed to adjust their monitors in order to see the full range of tones in the image?

Regardless, I do (heavy emphasis on DO) appreciate all of the wonderful comments. It's not even a ribboner and yet it garnered far more voting stage comments than any other image in my portfolio. Thanks everyone! :)

Am I right to assume any of these images (among others), would rank way above 7 in a regular FS?

03/18/2009 06:31:48 AM · #85
Yeah... my shot was one I have been proud of for a while, and here it completely tanked... ah well!

I agree about low scores.. I rarely score below 3--its gotta be absolute garbage, but I'm not everyone!

Scores were tough in this challenge. I tried my best to spend time looking at images, but I also wanted to vote on them all--that takes a long time, and one can certainly develop image fatigue.

Only "Between Heaven and Earth" which was the blue ribbon winner was in my top 5--the rest were scattered all the way down to almost 500th place. I'll be posting my posthumous winners for sure!

How would you like to be the MORON that entered a shot I really loved, but didn't realize it went into the wrong challenge until AFTER rollover!!

NO votes for me! (DOH!!!)

Which challenge did you enter it in? You're allowed to have senior moments when you're 94!

:P

Free study, but the shot isn't valid for the current month as it's older, so no good for nada!!

That's a shame, because that would have done really well in the Hidden Gems. Does that ease the pain?

19 x 3

= 65 votes of 4 or below.

but also 15 x 10

overall average 6.2389
Holy cow batman! Why so many such low scores? Just doesn't make sense to me. I try to give scores of 4 or below to out-of-focus badly processed poorly composed photos that don't meet the challenge.
I guess it didn't meet the challenge.

I love your image and gave it a 9. I didn't have time to leave any comments during this challenge, but I absolutely love the color! That's what originally caught my eye.

As for the giving of ones, twos and threes - I wonder about that as well. I wasn't expecting great scores with the image I posted - I wanted to challenge people, and judging by the voting, I did achieve that goal. Based on my comments and scores received, it seems that quite a few people dismissed my image outright, while the folks that gave it a higher score took the time to really look at it. It also makes me wonder if folks have their monitors calibrated correctly...

Anyway, I wonder how people score. I feel that unless the image doesn't meet the challenge, or is technically horrible, it deserves at least a five.

Not really a gripe on my part, just surprise as I thought my photo would have scored higher, or at least higher than my ugly bug photo. I do notice that it must have made a big difference on the monitor it was viewed on though (or maybe it's just personal preference). The comments ranged from just right, to a little too much to way too much. Some of the comments gave me some different ideas on how to redo the photo, and for that I'm thankful. I was able to take a photo that I really like and turn into something that I like even better.

Kelli - Like every challenge (and probably most voters), I was saddened that some of my favorite images in the challenge didn't do well. I wasn't surprised though because while I liked them I could see upfront that some simply wouldn't do well here. I was really surprised by yours, however:

I love the lighting & the tones, and thought that made it special. I certainly don't see anything here to frighten or offend voters and make it score so low.

And just when I thought I was better at predictions...

I love my shot, was delighted that I've sold a few copies, am proud that it's virtually right out of the camera, I got a 2:1 ratio of 10s to 1s, 9s to 2s, etc, and 60 pretty darn complimentary comments.

I'm ecstatic with my 324th placing.

Can I say that here in the griping thread?

No. You're supposed to complain about your 2 1's and say you thought it was better than it scored. Then question the collective intelligence of the voters and the quality of the equipment they have dared view your perfect picture on.

Get with the programme; all voters are idiots.

Well I thought this would do **much** better than 6.2, but the problem with taking a picture of an unbelievable sunset is that--it's unbelievable.

Submission:

I did make the mistake perhaps of adding a little bit more pop of an already edited photo at the end of the process--but not that much (see below). Mostly what I did was to boost the contrast on the black side), and then brightened up the buildings -- perhaps too much.

Of course, the original RAW isn't this saturated. I may have touched the saturation in the last edits, but I think what i did mostly were levels and contrast changes. Oh and I ended up cropping it a bit more so the horizon was less centered.

I have these handy from the Archive POTW, so I'll point here. This is actually a different shot, taken a bit later. So the sky is a little different, and more localized, but you can see how intense and beautiful it was even there. It's mainly the buildings that need to be brought out.

RAW:

Processed:

I was planning on entering this wider shot, but when it was reduced, even a little, I started to get worried people would see it as "too small" in details, making it lose a focal point. So I went with the one I did and made the mistake of a boost at the end.

Here's the same shot, as I prepped it for printing. This is very true to the scene as I remember it:

And by the way, it makes an incredible print either on paper or canvas! An earlier edit of this photo was a Kodak Picture of the Day and will be published in a book about how to shoot winning photos (other than on DPC) ;)

what i thought was strange when voting was the number of consecutive images that were the same topic, even though they are random ..
cityscape cityscape cityscape stream stream stream child child ..

just weird ..

I, too, want to gripe about my score. This scored entirely too high. My gosh, people, it's a snapshot! C'mon! What were you thinking??

Apparently I'm not the only one shocked by my exceedingly high score:

P.S. Per requests (lots of 'em), I did go back and add the names of the snapshotees, with a lot of help from Sander Admiraal. If I have anyone wrong, or someone knows the one person in the first row I can't identify, please let me know.

Well, i loved your idea and i wish i could be there, that gave you some points from me.

I feel (reluctantly) that my image got what it deserved.

What really annoys is SOME of the images that scored higher.

Sadly, I only have 4M pixels to play with, and I hadn't got up to speed on how to take/edit raw when this was taken.
And, well, it is a bit out of focus.

Still, we live and learn. And when I get my DSLR..........

If it makes you feel any better, you might have the only sub-6 photo of Serdar on this site. ;-P
