I have a photoshoot for a family scheduled for the end of March. I gave them my standard pricing for a portrait package including prints. They don't want the prints though, just a disc with the pics on it. Should I charge less since they're not getting any prints? Or do I keep it the same since they'll be making their own prints of my shots? Thanks for any help guys!

Give them the disk.

Charge them more for a release to print them, since they'll be making all the prints they want from them.

I'm not sure what others do, but if they want the file I charge $25.00 for a 4x6in-5x7in sized file. Large prints are done through me only.

They're trying to get over on you. They don't want to spend any money. They think a $1.87 at walmart is fine for an 8x10 so why pay you $30 or whatever.

Bottom line is you are running a business and need to pay the bills and yourself. I need to get $75 at a minimum for every hour I work. And if I could get that for every hour in a 40 hour week I might be doing just fine, but reality is there is a busy season and a slow season, etc.

So you have the time to set the appointment, prep and pack, travel, shoot, travel home, DL pics, cull the bad ones, get to proofs. The session fee rarely is enough to pay for the time involved up to this point.

At this point I'd ask them to pick their faves and I'd edit them and they'd get them as prints. I do projection proofing so there's more prep time and sales time. Then you have to actually order the prints, get them in, frame or package them, and do delivery (whether you take it to them or they come to you it still takes time).

A package lets you know you'll get paid for the 5 hours you have tied up in their images. If they spend more you make a nice profit. If they only want the disks...well then you need to charge properly!

Once they have the images they may print as much as they want - including mousepads or christmas cards or any of that stuff, or get coffee cup or blanket made, etc.

I do weddings and seniors differently and rarely get asked for a hi-res file and it's NOT on any of my pricelists.

If the average fam session sale is $400 and 4 poses, then each file is worth $100. OK, make it $95 and they can print what they want.

I think I'm just going to tell them that the shoot will be the same price whether they choose to have just a disc or just prints. That way I'm not low balling myself just giving them the disc. And if they do choose the disc it will be cheaper and simpler for me anyway (not having to order prints).

tell them the prints are included, free of charge - no discount. If you just "give" them the disc, you're making the value of your service much less.

Also, is it really "cheaper"? If you charge for your work and not the paper it's printed on, you will create a higher value of your product. You're not selling paper or a disc, you are selling your work/art/service.
