I am looking into buying a prime lens, I was looking at the 50mm f/1.4 and the 85mm f/1.8 ... and I cant decide which one to go with. I wanna use it mostly for portrait and everyday use, and the image quality is my priority... I am kinda leaning toward the 50mm, which one would you guys recommend ? :)

For the 40D your best bet might be the 50mm. It is very close to the 85mm on a full frame camera.

Both are very good lenses. The sharpness will blow you away.

I have both.

I find that I use the 50mm f1.4 80% to 90% of the time. They are both excellent wide open. But for natural light portraits and indoors, the 50mm wins in my book.

85 by a LONG margin for me.... I have never been a huge fan of the 50 on a crop body... it's not one or the other and that 1.4 lens is just ho hum (I know I will get flamed for that but it's my opinion :)

Heck, you can't go wrong with either one. Purely for portraits, I prefer longer focal lengths, but if you are constrained by smaller interior spaces and need to shoot full body, you'll want the 50mm. As far as IQ, set both to f/2 or so, and you'll be very satisfied with the sharpness of either, and they both have nice bokeh, so the decision really boils down to which focal length will serve you better.

I absolutely love my 50mm 1.4 and it stays on my camera about 80% of the time. Of course, if I had the 85mm, I might be saying the same about that lens. I think if you want something you can use for everyday use, the 50mm is your best bet in terms of focal length.
