This is probably an age old debate but I'd like to hear from folks who've used the two lenses. I personally own the 70-300 IS. It's really great. However, I just bought the 24-105mm L (my first L) and I'm blown away at the quality of the lens! It got me thinking... should I upgrade my telephoto?

I've used the 100-400mm IS L once and it was 2 years back. I used it for about an hour and don't really remember it as I didn't get a chance to spend a lot of time with it. It'd be great to have the extra reach but I wish it had a fixed aperature for that kind of money.

[ edit ]If it makes a difference, I'm shooting with the Canon 40D.

Thoughts?

Thanks.
