There seems an endless supply of 'how much to charge' threads on here, so take a look at the following link & decide if you're charging enough:
Pics for sale by newspaper, from gamers convention
This is one of hundreds of pics being sold by a local newspaper, in a town of well under 200k people. Looks too snapshot for my tastes, and they are charging nearly as much as I am (more than me on a certain size!) Do you think you can produce work this good?
Do your prices reflect that quality? (Feel free to discuss) :)

anyone have thoughts to share on this?
is the economy THAT bad, with everyone afraid to charge for work? i mean, its happening to us, too. lots of inquiries (love the work!), few appointments scheduled (scared by price). |

Hmm, those prices are quite high, considering the quality, however, this guy probably didn't get paid to do the shooting, so has to make all of his money on the print sales, which might explain the prices? |

he is selling event photographs, not art photographs. so the reason he's charging that much is because he's counting on the fact that the people that are in the photos will want a keepsake from the event and thus will pay good money for the shot. |

the pics are being sold by the newspaper, after having a PJ cover the event. seems they want a piece of any pie they can get these days (not that I blame them)

price has little relationship to quality. Is a Rolls Royce at $400,000 better than a honda fit at $14,000? Are all movies equally good? But they cost the same...
In this case it's supply and demand. The paper got the pic - the ONLY one like it. You want it? You'll pay whatever they're asking or not get it.
Same thing applies in a snow storm or other emergency - prices go up for items where the quality hasn't changed at all, it's supply - when you got the only generators in town or the only bottle water or the last snow shovel you can charge what you like, regardless of the quality.

Regardless of what it's called, it's basic Economics.
If there were 3 photographers there they would naturally compete against eachother on price and quality and customers would get a better deal, with the worst photographer(s) going out of business. Only having 1 photographer means that he can get lazy with quality and charge whatever he likes. |

Has noone ever done price researching? Seriously, those are pretty average prices for individual prints. |

The prices in the link are close to what I charge - except I offer discounts for quantity and the 4x6 is about double what I charge. $25 for an 8x10 is spot on. |

I just looked at a local paper for a similar service.
You can't buy 1 4x6. The smallest single size you can buy is a 5x7. It was 18 or 19 dollars, I think. You buy the 4x6s in sets of 4 for 24.95. |

I hate 4x6's. Everybody thinks they should be cheap because they can be had for $0.19 at the local discount store but a good one takes just as much time to produce. I wouldn't sell them except that there are so many cool frames for them these days at stores like target.

Newspapers often sell their images. In fact, the one I work for uses that same provider to do just that. Every time I shoot I have to put a handful of extra images up there for sale including the ones that print. Our prices are higher than that paper's stuff too.
It's not art and shoulnd't be judged as so. People buy those photos like candy. You would be surprised at how much is made in sales of those types of photos, especially if they got printed in the newspaper.

The big difference between a $10 4x6 and a $0.19 4x6 is that the $0.19 place won't go make the photo for you for that price.

a car has about $400 in metal in it, but you can't get a car for $400. You can buy the materials for a house for $40,000 - and assemble it yourself. But few do. .19c is the cost of the paper. not the cost of the image.
