How many people here insure their gear? I live in Japan and I'm not 100 percent how to insure my gear or how much to expect it to cost. If you look at my profile page I have enough to be worried about things getting stolen, but I also live in one of the safest countries in the world where I'm often looked at as the cause of crime (I'm not Japanese). Anyways, just looking for some ideas. |

if you don not make any money off your gear then your home owners/renters insurance company should cover it to some degree or you can add a rider to it.
If you make money off it then you need business insurance coverage.
Now in either case being in a foreign country can complicate matters. My business insurance liability and gear covers me in the US and it's territories. I am not covered for canada or mexico or anyplace else - they don't offer it at all. So if I travel (which I don't) then I'd need to find more insurance.
Cost will vary by type of insurance, amount of insurance, and where you are. If I never made any money I could get insurance for $30 a year added onto my homeowners that would cover all my gear. The biz insurance I've got is $513 a year.

My homeowners insurance covers my camera gear. We're headed for Mexico in a week and I double checked international coverage. One catch - I had to supply the insurance company with a copy of receipts for the gear. |

i'll say once again - and likely take the same BS beating i took the last number of times i mentioned this...
it's a bad idea to insure your gear as a rider or any attachment to your homeowners/renter policy.
why ?
1 - your homeowners already covers the gear if it's stolen from your car or house - lost in a fire at your house... etc.
2 - if you want to claim a $3000 loss on your homeowners policy - for say a theft of your gear. it's one check on the 'risky' insured boxes as far as they are concerned. therefore - one easy way for them to raise their premiums to recoup 'their' loss...
3 - it's one small potato compared to your house actually burning down, or any other major catastrophe you might encounter.
i would advise getting a seperate policy through some insurer - soley for your gear. not tied to your homeowners in any way shape or form.
if you don't comprehend the fact that insurers are there as a business to make money off you - you need a wake up call.... ie: they look for any way to make MORE money off you, and upfront free candy - so to speak - with a high price in the long run does you no good.

And when you drop your lens and it shatters you can use one of them to rob a camera store for a new lens!

State Farm will write a policy seperate from your homeowners provided you don't make any income from photography which in their eyes would designate you as being a professional. Since this is not a rider, a claim for equipment doesn't increase your homeowner premiums. Back in early November they quoted me something like $1.30 per $100 of value insured.

I have a personal articles policy from State Farm for all my stuff. It's cheap, covers theft, loss, and accidental breakage. Cost is something like $135 a year for $10K worth of gear. |
