I'm in the need of some education and was hoping someone had the need to teach...

I'm somewhat confused as to why when I have my camera in program mode and my flash (Sigma EF-530 DG Super) attached I am not able to adjust my aperture or shutter speed? I'm sure there is a totally valid explination for this but I'm not seeing it. Any help would be great. Thanks

Program mode is basically like auto mode, only with a little more freedom (wider ISO range, controlled flash instead of popping up by itself.) The camera chooses shutter and aperture in this mode.

Try it in manual, aperture priority, or shutter priority if you want to control different settings.

Thanks for the reply...I do however have the ability to change my aperture when I have the camera in program mode and am not using a flash...But I guess just switching over to aperture priority of full manual would be the way to go.

When it comes to flash, the aperture is the only limiting factor for your flash. Since the flash fires much faster than your shutter. That's probably why you cannot change the aperture.

When you use your flash in aperture priority mode, your flash is just used for fill to blend the light with the background. If you don't have any background light, your flash won't put out much fill.

If you go manual, you set the shutter and aperture and the flash tries to fill in with what light is needed (for the given shutter/aperture).

I would highly suggest you try out manual for indoor photography and aperture for outdoor stuff. If it's a highly critical situation and you need to get the shot, switch it to P mode.

Also, you should check out photonotes for everything you needed to know about Canon flash.

EDIT: forgot to answer the question and also added photonotes link

Nullix....Thanks for the knowledge! I'm still a little leary about shooting in manual mode but I guess I'm never gonna learn if I don't try. Thanks again!
