This february i will be traveling to wisconsin for a couple of shoots. This is the first time I will be traveling on a plane with my lighting equipment and im not sure what kinda of case to buy that will protect my equipment. I have 3 alien bee lights along with 3 stands, a boom arm, cords, recievers and trigers, and a large octabox(which i can fold). I am looking for a case that will hold up in airline travel, and carry everything that I listed. Any suggestions? I would totally appreciate it!

You might be better off renting gear near your destination. Traveling by air with lights can be a PITA.

If you decide that bringing the lights is your best solution, I suggest the following:

-Use a hard case for the lights themselves. I'm partial to Pelikan cases, they're expensive, but worth it

-Remove the flash tubes, package them with lots of padding, preferably in the box they ship in and carry them on.

-If the modeling lights use special bulbs, do the same with them.

-Bring spares for all bulbs and flashtubes.

Nothing sucks more than being out in the boonies, discovering that your flashtube is kaput, not having a spare and realizing that you won't get the shot because by the time you get a tube to where you are, you'll be back home.

I am trying to figure out how to get around with all my modifiers I've picked up now. My lights and stands are all snug and tight in their cases, but I have no "professional" way to travel with my snoots, beauty dishes, and different size reflectors.

Those would be my suggestions to start with. I prefer the padded foam dividers since that gives you much more flexibility, but the "pick 'n pluck" foam gives more protection.

Ship it to your location.

That's a good option too, since you'll probably have to pay extra to check it as baggage and if you get it too heavy, you'll pay even more or they just won't take it at all. Check with your airline. With the airline, you also run the risk of them losing it and the most they'll pay is $750 and since the lights are electronic equipment (something they advise against packing in luggage), they may pay nothing if your case goes missing.

It'd still be a good idea to have a case for shipping and you should insure it for replacement value. If you ship it to your hotel, make sure to call the hotel and ask them to accept the package for you and hold it. They should also hold it until the carrier comes back to ship it back to you.
