Friday's Full Moon

According to NASA, this Friday's (December 12, 2009) full moon is going to be the biggest of the year. Now you have 3 days to scout the perfect location to capture it!

Iwo Jima anyone?

hopefully we'll get relief from the grey winters here in Michigan so I've got a chance of catching it!

With the moon at it's biggest and brightest it's not the best time for those chasing stars for the stars challenge :)

Maybe the clouds that have socked us in for a week (maybe more) will go away so I can get a chance!

The clouds are supposed to break for the first time here in Manistee, MI on Friday, so we might get lucky. I hope your area will also get clear!

I can't shoot the moon, it makes me suffer from a terrible debilitating disease called lens envy. So I'll just enjoy everyone elses :P

only two more days to plan...

The weatherman is calling for variable cloudiness and 20% POP. I like the sound of that, as some cloud will give some nice interest to the sky, especially if the setting sun casts a nice hue on them.

With the moon nearest the horizon in the east for sunset I'll have to figure out a suitably scenic spot.... hmmm.

Thanks for the post.

SNORK!!!!!!!!!

Don't I wish. It's even gloomier on this side of the state.

I know ... the whole Midwest area is usually cloud covered this time of year ... I'll be crossing my fingers that we'll get a window of opportunity from say, 11pm til 1 am Friday night!!

I have an idea where I'd like to catch this from, though to date I've never had a successful moon photo.

So Y'all will be shooting the moon where? Hopefully not near the Amtrack.

This might help people plan their shots a little.

For those wanting stars...

Space Weather News for Dec. 12, 2008
//spaceweather.com

WEEKEND METEORS: Earth is entering a stream of debris from extinct comet 3200 Phaethon, and this is causing the annual Geminid meteor shower. The shower is expected to peak on Dec. 13th and 14th. Normally, as many as 100 meteors per hour shoot out of the constellation Gemini, but this year a bright Moon will interfere with the display, reducing hourly counts to only 20 or so. That's could still be a nice show. For best results, watch the sky from 10 pm local time on Saturday night (Dec 13th) until dawn on Sunday morning (Dec. 14th).

BIGGEST FULL MOON OF THE YEAR: The Moon that's causing trouble for the Geminid display happens to be biggest full Moon of 2008, as much as 14% wider and 30% brighter than lesser Moons we've seen earlier this year. An astronomer would say this is a "perigee Moon" because it occurs at perigee, the side of the Moon's elliptical orbit closest to Earth. Go outside tonight and take a look. The meteor rate may be low, but the lunar beauty index is off the charts.

i took my moon shot last night since we are about to get a blizzard. its supposed to last all weekend, the high for tomorrow is `1 F. its going to be a very inside-by-the-fireplace weekend

this is very interesting...I live where the sun will set 2 mins before the moon rises, and it will also be cloudless but hazy which might make for some interesting colors. hmmmmm *strokes imaginary gotee*

I was hot walking around in my t-shirt today, and when i went to take pictures of the moon, it was almost 'cool' out, maybe 65.

Past 2 weeks were extremely clear skies until today. Cloudy with rain coming tonight :(

Clear enough here to see the moon. It doesn't look bigger, but it does look noticeably brighter.

Weather is perfect here. I guess that I should go get a shot of it, but it would look exactly like my other full moon shots. I did get it rising earlier this evening.
I spotted it when I drove over the local river, so I pulled off and ran back up the bridge with a camera and monopod.
