this is a pic of a friends very old dog ....I want to put the whole background into a soft colour just leaving her face. I don't have the PS skills to do this. Can anyone help please. I need to have this pic soon as I want to be able to give it to her owner.

Pips, the dog, is 21 yrs old and this was the best pic I could get as she now has lumps on her body and around one side of her face. She's going for her last visit to the vet this wk and the pic would be a great comfort to her owner.

thanks for any help

What color background?

It's a tricky thing to do and make look either even vaguely believeable, or that pleasant.

Why not leave it as it is? The tones of the wood work excellently with the tones of Pips' coat - and it's really a very fine animal portrait, in my opinion: charcterful, real, simple ... what more could you want?

Just my opinion.

I agree, the shot, as is, is perfect. I would leave it as is and just have a print made up.

thank you :D that 'just the face' was what I was thinking of but having seen it it does have an eerie feeling. Isn't it strange how you have this clear vision of how a pic will look in your mind, but when you do finally see it....it doesn't work or is not right.

thankyou for your time and help

I tried this, but knowing the history, it looks kinda morbid IMHO...

You can also just blur the background a bit like this.
Blurred background

This makes the face stand out a bit without looking too odd.

That looks better than mine. I might blur just a touch more, but that might not look 'right'...

Here's another take on it...

I darkened the wood, brough out some of the green tone that's there, did a little soft focus with the face remaining sharp, burned the bright area on the forehead, desaturated the green tag (it seemed distracting), and dodged a few areas gently.
Overall effect, IMO is to put more emphasis on the face, while not changing the (very nice) original significantly.
