what is it called when you have a sequence of photos that show steps for doing somthing? Not like an overlap with a strobe, but a seris of individual photos in a motion sequence?

A zoetrope used such a sequence of images.
Also known as a Daedalum (wheel of the devil...) and was a marked improvement on the phenakistoscope.
It ended up being replaced by a praxinoscope which eventually turned in to cinema, when flexible film was invented by George Eastman (of Eastman-Kodak)
