Remie,

Your point begs an "ethical" question I've been meaning to ask.

I have some favorite subjects that I like to shoot from time to time, and photos of some of these subjects are in my gallery. Should one of those subjects fit a challenge, I may go back and re-shoot that subject for the challenge.

If that happens, should I remove the similar shots from my gallery?

Jim,

I think the real measure of one''s work comes not from whether the voting masses collectively say, "Ooh, pretty picture!" but rather whether you accomplished what you set out to do with it. We''d all like to have an eve-upward voting trend like PaulinaRD but few of us will ever accomplish that.

Last week''s submission was the first where I felt truly happy with the photo I submitted. I did everything I wanted to with it, everything worked, and there was nothing in the shot I didn''t intend. That said, the photo was not designed to appeal to everyone. What I was very happy with, though, was the number and quality of the comments I got on the photo. It was meaningful to me that 29 people took the time to share their thoughts on my work with me. It also says a lot to me that so many people looked at the photograph in enough detail to do so. I put the photo out there to get commentson the subject matter, and I got comments on the subject matter. In other words, I succeeded.

The scoring spreads here are such that one can get a moderate reaction from everyone and place high. Personally, I''d rather make a few people say "WOW," even if that means placing low overall. Of course, you''re one of the gifted ones that''s made people say "wow" and placed.

-Terry

Club, I think you are right.. I *DID* accomplish my goal on this photo this week for sure. I have a few comments that are inspiring, and I have some bonehead comments as well. I worked with a particular image that week that would definitely draw some of both.

I meant to ask you once again how the new camera is working out... hope things are going well with it... I would like to talk to you sometime to compare features on that camera with my Sony F707. The Minolta wasn't one of the models I looked at when I was shopping...

I have also started my PBASE gallery finally... it's available on the link below and, NO, this week's photo is not there :)

It's working out great, I love it. As you know I bought it the last week in April. So far, I've taken ~1200 pictures with it.

Chariot pointed me to an article this morning which said that Minolta is releasing a firmware update for sale later this summer, that adds some significant new functionality and features to the camera. It looks like it will be well worth the $50.

Talk to you soon.

To be honest, I think you shouldn't re-shoot that subject then, but be creative, go for something new and try to shoot another subject :)

That's a lotta pitchers :) I have had my F707 since the first of march or so and I am about to cross the 1800 photo mark sometime this week probably...

I'm not sure I agree with that... I would use the *best* idea for the challenge, even if it did mean re-shooting a previously shot subject. I did this for the very first challenge I entered here...

Was looking at the F707 in a shop today. whats your opinion of it. I also looked at the Fuji 6900 and although it looks like it would be a good camera, it feels cheap to the touch (plastiky).

I currently believe that the F707 has everything I could possibly want without going to an SLR. Currently, the only drawback I see on the F707 is the memory stick. You are limited to 128mb per stick and the cost of the storage is higher than the compact flash cards used by other cameras. The optics are great... the image quality is exceptional, fully manual or fully automatic exposure (and priority modes) as well...

I wish it had more than 4 resolution modes... I can shoot at .3mp, 1.2mp, 3.3mp, and 5mp only. I would love to have a broader range here...

I have no real complaints about the F707... it has been fun to use so far :)

Dogman,

i would wait until this challenge is over to buy a new camera.. the F707 will not 'digest' very easily ;)

06/19/2002 09:02:49 AM · #63
Yeah, but you watch the money try to digest in my hand when I try to part with it
06/19/2002 09:04:11 AM · #64
I made that comment on 'digestion' based on the comment you left on my photo :)

Sorry, you'll have to refresh my memory, don't think I've ever said anything nasty !!
06/19/2002 09:35:04 AM · #66
It wasn't nasty.. lol.. it was quite flattering... however, it did indicated that if this photo did not meet certain expectations, that you would eat your camera.. lol ...

better get ready to chow down :D

I like your B&W shots. The framing of the "Maya and Adam"-photo is very good.

Did you vote after you knew or before? Just curious :)[/i]
I voted after I knew. Why?[/i]

I'm just curious if Dangerous was influenced by it.

In this case jm is a respected member of this site who is making good pictures and is giving good comments. Besides that he's a moderator of this site. I can imagine these are reasons for people to please him and therefor give him higher votes and nice comments. Ofcourse it can also be a reason for people to vote him down, but I think that's more unlikely because people might think that a moderator can monitor everything on this site.

The voting-system on this site is clean and fair because we don't know who the photographers are untill voting has finished and I think it should stay that way. Therefor I just don't agree that photographers reveal their photo (or outtakes) before the voting has finished. Voters can be influenced by it, even ones that say they are not. To prevent any misunderstandings, I'm not saying you or Dangerous where influenced, I'm just saying that it can happen.

Just my opinion.
[/i]

Personally I think jmsetzler is a crackpot who's using a Fisher-Price Viewmaster instead of a camera. ;) Just kidding!

I would like to say that I vote 'em as I see 'em and have no problems telling anyone why I scored their photo the way I did. I would love to do that when commenting, but it would take all week and I'd never get any pictures taken. I have even gone to the extent of digitally editing others' photos to show them how they could have done it better. As I said in another post, feel free to reveal your submission to me by email if you want a thought out, honest evaluation of your photo.

Besides, I have no reason to impress a moderator. The only people I have to impress are the voters. And lately I don't even feel the need to do that. I am seldom satisfied with the pictures I submit here and my scores have shown it lately. I am feeling the need to get back to shooting for myself.
