Hi everyone

Recently had a couple of photoshoots mainly for the purpose of stock. Models were paid and signed releases for the stock photo websites. It was also agreed that I would supply each with two key print size samples. Question is, do I fork over actual copy of files or do I insist on physical prints?, and just give web size files for online portfolios? Also, in the case of full size files, or prints, should my copyright remain? This only in regards to what the models should get, not the stock site. I have not been in this position before so please excuse my ignorance! Thanks

You do whatever you agreed to do.

Was never talked about it in detail, so I just was hoping for a lesson in proper protocol, if that even exists!

Well, that's a lesson you can use next time, I guess.

What do the models expect? As long as it's reasonable, I'd say just give it to them.

The proper protocol is to have all this hashed out before you start shooting.

In this situation I would generally have my copyright on the digital files but not on the prints.

They should be aware that the photographer owns the copyright anyway and so having it on digital files shouldn't be a problem to them. Especially as they were being paid for the shoot, often I would give paid models digital copies of the best shots for self promotion as much as anything else but it's never agreed beforehand.

If you had agreed to give prints then do that. If you'd just agreed to give them something at the end of it but not really specified what, and you'd paid a rate dependant on these "extras" for them, then I would say go with what you think is right.
