A friend of mine is getting a new slr, and his top choices are the Nikon d200 or Canon 30d. Only thing is that he is very unsure, and spending alot of money on something you're not sure about isnt a good idea. Which camera would be a better choice?

If he's getting a new one, why not the D300 instead of D200?

is this a first SLR or an upgrade?

Both of the above are good cams. Your friend should look for the opportunity to handle both at a shop. Which feels more natural in the hand? How's the balance feel, do the controls seem easy enough to understand. When I bought a new DSLR a month ago, I went to buy one camera, and came home with another. I have big hands, and the cam I chose felt right in my hands. The other felt too small, too light. I prefer a larger heavier cam.

There are plenty of partisans for one side or the other, to fuel the debate.

Personally I chose the Canon 40D. But that is me and my choice. It might not be the right cam for someone else.

All of the name brand mid to higher end cams are capable of taking excellent photos.

It's really funny that you ask, because I have a D200 and LOVE it, and my fiancee owns a 30d and loves it!

If he already knows the basics of an SLR then he just needs to go and hold them in his hands and look through the menus. Find the one thats best layed out to his needs. I say get a lower end body and a really good lens.

exactly, my advice to him, was to save his money and get something like d300 or 40d, or buy the less expensive 30d and get a killer lens

i just think what he's looking for is advice from people with experice with each camera or both, so this thread should help him make up his mind haha
