I have recently purchased a nikon d60 and have been trying to shoot rc cars (gas remote control). The images are fairly decent but I would like them to be more crystal clear along with the background. I have been playing around with the settings but still not quite what I want. I have a 300mm lens. Any ideas on shutter speed and aperture? |

My guess is that they're moving too fast for your autofocus to keep up. You may want to stop down (higher F number) which will get more in focus, or you can prefocus on a spot they'll pass over and hold the button halfway down until just the right moment. |

Try setting your ISO to 400 or 800, use aperture priority @ F5.6 (I am guessing that is your fastest), and hope your shutter is at/above 1/400th.
Could tell you better if I knew the lens and if your shooting indoor or outdoor.

I guess I should have asked if it was a focus issue or a motion blur issue. Now I'm really curious. |

Its outdoors and it varies between being really sunny or cloudy. The lens I am using is a nikon/nikkor af 70-300mm 1:4-5.6g. Like I said they are turning out pretty well, I would just like to get the background not so blurry. |

I think you'd want the background more blurry and the car tac sharp. That's difficult with the car coming towards you.
Try panning the car as it moves from right to left or vice versa in front of you. This will get you a nice blurry non-distracting background.

So it would actually be better to have the background more blurry so it doesnt distract from the car? Hmmm never thought of that, I will try that too. |

A soft focus or blurry background will help remove all the competing elements from the image, drawing attention to the car.
Additionally, if you are panning from the side, the motion blur of the background while you are tracking the car, will help give an impresson of speed.
