Hi all,

I've been reading dpchallenge for about a year now and registered a few months ago. All wonderful stuff and such a talented bunch of people. I'm yet to pluck up the courage to enter a challenge, but I'm getting there and *nearly* enter lots of them...is that just me? How did everyone else get into the challenge game? Should I just post and forget? Your thoughts and experiences would be appreciated

Here's something that was inspired by 2 recent challenges - "Masks" and "High Contrast III". It wouldn't have been valid for either as it's not basic editing, but it was fun.

and here's a slightly larger version as the thumbnail's a little hard to make out

I wish I had found this site sooner.

My advice would be to start as soon as possible as you will learn a lot from this community.

You are right about it not meeting the editing requirements, but excellent work.

Everyone on here has so much talent. It's quite intimidating.

And the title of this thread should have an "a" before challenge. Not sure I can edit that. :)

The best thing you can do is just jump in with both feet. If a regular challenge is intimidating, try one of the many side challenges out there. They are a very good way to get your feet wet, in a very open and warm environment. :-)

As for the rgular challenges... I haven't been here very long as a member, but I lurked around for a while beforehand. I'm not really sure why I just went ahead and jumped in there. There was a challenge called "peek-a-boo." I thought I had a good entry, and just threw it in there. (after learning how to properly resize it and save for web that is.)

hey cool work, i just recently started mesing around with overlays, so i'd be interested in what was your source for the "mask" in that shot?
as for the challenges, i'd been a registered user for over a year before i became a member just submitting the open challenges and sucking the forums, which helped me soooo much, the side challenges are also a whole lot of fun and a good way to get feedback on stuff you'd normally not enter in a challenge.
just have fun and don't take anything too serious ;)

Thanks everyone.

The base of the mask is a strip of black facepaint across my daughter's eyes. The spray is built from a lot of layers of black ink poured/splattered onto white paper and scanned.

If I was doing it again, I would have thought it through more first and framed the original pic differently (the original was a full headshot and was cropped).

Sounds like committing to challenges becomes second nature. The side challenges might be the way for me to get over my initial shyness (though this is certainly helping).
