I would love to upgrade my D70 but the 300 and possibly 700 are a bit out of reach for me. A D90 would be perfect. The D80 has been out too long for simply a D80x/s. |
The July 1 announcement should be for the D700 / D90 and a couple lenses... all the hype has been about the D3x, but "legit" rumour mills like Thom Hogan seem to point to a D90 replacement rather than the D3x. At any rate, we should know in a couple days. |

I keep getting a serious case of the "oh damns" when I read things like this about full-frame but then I remember what I value most, telephoto and that a FF will make that suffer, then I feel ok again. :)

Wouldn't Nikon OFFICIALLY announce it on there website?

They're supposed to announce on the 1st which is tomorrow. The magazines are July's issue which sometimes ship early due to a when the 1st falls during the week, so those are early deliveries. I recieved my military disability check today also instead of the 1st like usual. |

I'm disappointed that the normal ISO range bottomed out at 200 instead of 100 like the D200. I see that 100 can be had with "boost", but I'd like to have seen it in the normal usage range, or even better yet, ISO 50 or 25.
Ditto the want of digital N90s. I feel I'm paying for speed I never use. Since I bought my first Nikon with an integral drive back in the 1980s (a N8008) I don't think I've used the continuous "C" mode more 2-3 times at the most. My only fear with a N90s level digital would be dropping the AI support, which would be a deal breaker for me.

I didn't see this listed above, so here's a link to the DP Review preview:
D700 Preview
EDIT: Here's a page showing side-by-side comparisons of the D300, the D700, and the D3.

like on the d3 there's no visible noise up to iso800 so why even bother using iso100 except for the sake of shooting at open apertures? |

Try getting a long exposure in daylight ;-)
Even with ISO 100 available natively on the 5D(and ISO 50 through expansion), I still keep a 10-stop ND filter around for this purpose.
The D700 looks like a fabulous machine at a really attractive price point, and I fully expect that the image quality will be superb. Kudos to Nikon for upping the ante. |

The only drawback to me is that the viewfinder only shows 75% of the image. Did I read that right?

No, I don't think so.
95% coverage, 0.72x viewfinder (D3: 100% / 0.7x)
So you see 95% of the image, at .72x size relative to the sensor (so you actually see it smaller than the sensor does--I think!)

I had thought that a 99% viewfinder like on the D300 was really important, however since I've been using it I've noticed that if I don't look 100% straight down the viewfinder the scene shifts a little so I might end up cutting something off, the 95% viewfinders don't have that problem since no matter how you look through them you will capture everything you see + more. So it is really a pro and con thing. |

Looks pretty sweet. Now I have to come up with a way to get some moolah to purchase it. Then again, I've only got about 30,000 clicks on my D50 so I should probably wait a bit or my fiancee will shoot me (and not with a camera!)

I will wait for the Canon 5D Mk2 release and pricepoint. Let the price wars begin. Hope I am in Europe by Photokina time (by this time Canon must have released something new or they will look really stupid at the show). Photokina is also the moment that the D3x will arrive.
It seems Canon now have delayed the 5D Mk2 because it offers not enough compared to the competition. By Photokina time also Sony will have a FF model, which will sit a little bit below the Nikon D700 in build quality and price.
Anyway, the D700 will be my next camera. I hate flash and want good high iso performance. Maybe by the time that I want this puppy there will even be an even less expensive FF camera. The D700 is labeled by Nikon as Pro, with Pro support.
Interesting times.

You about gave me a heart attack about the D700 being called pro by nikon, I am learning I am very insecure about my purchase even if I do love the camera. However checking google, nikons page lists the D300 as one of their pro dslrs, so I'm comfortable again, lol...

My guy at Henrys said they have 1 instore order (he left like 10 mins before I got there) and about 20 company wide and tons of SB900s on order. I canĂ¢€™t wait till they get one instock to just play with for a bit.

If I wasnt so heavily invested in Canon the Nikon line-up looks incredibly tempting. I'd go for the D3 the whole way.. usable iso25600 - yes please.. |

I don't consider my Rebel XT usable above ISO400, but I guess there's always Neat Image.
I agree - Canon needs to put something tasty out there. I want FF, 14/16-bit, 16MP, excellent at ISO6400, 6fps, all for $1500! =D |

I also agree, Canon needs to put out a good response to this, and I have every confidence they will. I fully expect that the successor to the 5D will be priced at or above $3k. Canon has consistently priced it's entries above the Nikon equivalents.
I also expect that Canon will come with a 5D replacement in early Fall, with an announcement probably in late August. It's entirely possible that the 5D replacement may be available before Nikon ships the D700, unless Nikon improves its track record on announce-to-ship delays. It's also entirely possible that the 5D replacement will not be a 5D replacement, but a higher-end model with the 5D remaining in the lineup, perhaps with a "MkII" tweak.
But this is all just speculation, and we will have to wait to see what Canon counters with. |
