Maybe I should mention that my car does 50 to the gallon normally. Although, I feel honour-bound to mention that it is a diesel.

Oh, and it's a Skoda, too. The last part is the deal-breaker, I know.

I moved a 36" sony tv in the fit the other day. It Fit perfect. For a small ride it rules. My last Car was a diesel truck and it usually ended up in the 19-20MPG range. Which was sweet because it ran awesome. However Diesel is already $5 a gallon here and my truck had a 35 gal tank so that would put me at $175 to fill up. That is more than I have ever spent on a lens!

And yes, I could get 3 adults in the back seat. 3 children are a snap.

ROFL do you really think the compression ratio(a mechanical calculation) would change with the altitude?

Cylinder effeciency would change based on the fact that the O2% is lower with Altitude, however with the computer controls had on cars today those calculations are made(generally on the fly) to compensate for all of these things.

The compression ratio doesn't change (of course) but the cylinder pressure at TDC definitely does...

At Sea level: 14.7 psia compressed 10:1 gives 147 psia (ignoring temperature rise, which results in significantly higher measured compression).

At 10,000 feet: 12.1 psia compressed 10:1 gives 121 psia, again ignoring temperature rise.

The wind resistance also decreases because the air density has decreased. The total effect of altitude on fuel economy is so dependent on multiple vehicle-related variables that it is not possible to generalize about it.

Is that real gas mileage, or is it the mileage that the car on the computer calculated?

I have a VW JETTA TDI and the computer regularly overrates the mileage by 10-20%. Still, I can't complain - my overall mileage in 40k of driving is more than 42mpg based on real fill up monitoring.

Did you fill it up to test out exactly what the gas mileage really was?
Those Fits look like great little cars and the mileage is suppose to be good, but it does seem extremely high.

301 miles on 6.2 gallons of gas.

My average has been well over the 28-34 they claim. I have never had worse than 38 and I have 3400 miles on it.

Still driving my 1973 super beetle and when well tuned, I get up to 30 mph.

Well we could ruin the gas mileage and improve the HP for you lol! Before the fit came to america tuners had already started shuving K20 and K24 engines from the Civic/RSX/newer CRX's they fit real snug!

Perhaps for your next post, you could try English.

I think I am going to let somebody do that do it in about 5 years when I am ready to replace it with something else. I think it would be a cool car to have all fancified and what not.

Anyone that knows cars will tell you that the 1970 Hemi Cuda is the only real car ever invented. The rest are just goofy looking boxes with wheels. ;)

37 mpg city this week. 9.033 gallons and 334 miles. So it seems that I am averaging way above sticker for fuel economy.

That is awsome Jason. It seems you got the one they meant to send for mileage testing - sweet!

I think they are making the car companies be very careful about inflating the numbers. Back in the day they were trying to tell people that Tahoes got 30hwy, and I think that somebody cracked down on them. I don't think I will ever get 28 in this car.

The car is cool for not just the mileage by the way. This thing kicks but in many different ways. I am going to buy a second one around Christmas.

The EPA test protocols were changed beginning with the 2007 model year to better account for higher speeds, cold weather, and use of air conditioning and other accessories. This means that estimates are now more in line with what drivers can reasonably expect to attain, but it also means that 2007 and later vehicles' EPA mileage estimates are not directly comparable with those for 2006 and earlier. The EPA's //www.fueleconomy.gov web site has revised estimates for model year 2006 and earlier vehicles for ease of comparison.

Ya, I figured something was up. That 37 was with the AC on the entire time. I think we will get the Hybrid this winter and shoot for the mid 60's low 70's. That would be cool.

We just bought a 2008 Nissan Versa that has posted mileage of 27/33. We lost a car due to floods and had to get a replacement. I'll post real world mileage when we actually go through a tank (bought it last Sunday). Pictures to come later.

I would be interested because I almost bought the versa. It should do better than that mileage. It was very similar the the Fit in several ways, but had some cool features like the key that isn't a key which I thought was cool.

You really won't get a true feel for your mileage until you're at least through the break-in period.

Yeah, I usually find that the first gas mileage is lower, but I track a new car every 1000 miles for a mixed tank, a highway tank, and any long trip we make. My wife drives it so I'm not sure what to expect for mileage. I alwaus get better than her under the same conditions, she tends to brake harder, accelerate faster, etc.

ETA: We got the SL with CVT tranny, blue tooth, sunroof, keyless remote/start, 6 CD changer. Can't wait to take it on a long trip and see how comfortable it is on the road.

I got to drive my co-worker's Fit yesterday at lunch. Nice. I'm 6'0" and no problem for me with either the roof height or visibility... in fact, I though the visibility was phenomenal. I liked the way the car handled; I drove it about 15 minutes in a combination of city and freeway driving.

FWIW, Volkwagen is coming out with a new diesel engine for the Jetta and Jetta Wagon that is supposed to deliver mileage in the 55mpg range. Even with the price premium for diesel, that makes a good deal.

Especially over my POS Ford Focus which can't get over 27mpg to save its life.
