My girlfriend deleted about 300+ pics today, one of them whic is in the current challenge.

I was able to recover them from the Norton recycle bin, but the file names have been changed from the original name.

from what I can tell the exif data is intact, but not sure if this will land me in trouble if my pic needs to be validated with the original file sine the original was somewhat messed with during the deletion process

I'd be willing to bet, if you can still view the image and the exif data, the contents weren't corrupted. I don't think you need to worry about the file date and time - when pictures are uploaded to DPC, their names, and probably date stamp, are changed anyway. It's what's in the exif that counts.

Although we prefer that "originals" have their "from the camera" name (and although the file is renamed after it is uploaded, the Site Council does get to see the original name of the file), I'm not aware of any DQ that occurred because the original was renamed. But if you have a choice, and don't mind, keep the camera file name. (You can always store them in a folder for organizational purposes which can then have a meaningful name.)

Ok thanks guys.

I do keep all my originals in the folder they are created in when the camera downloads them to the PC. All edited files go elsewere with a better naming for faster finding.

Im real particular on how I handle my originals, I just was not counting on my girlfriend to delete 3 days worth of images.....

she lost some GF points for that one...but gained a few back because i was able to recover them.

I just gone into my RAW images directory, 4.76GB, and applied READ ONLY to all files.

Thanks for the scary reminder!!!

~

Oh crap but that doesn't stop them from being deleted?!

~

Ok so firstly my aplogies if you are already aware of this? (XP and maybe 2000?) If you go to your root raw image directory (if you have one) and you go to

> Tools (tab)
> Folder Options (drop down)
> View (tab)
Scroll to bottom of "Advanced Settings options" list and de-select "Use Simple File Sharing"

This gives you access to the Advanced File Sharing parameters for files and directories.

So then now click on your root directory icon and go to

> Properties (drop down)
> Security (tab)

click on "Advanced" at the bottom.

> Permissions (tab)

Edit the permissions and

> check "Deny" for "Delete" and "Delete Subfolders and Files"
> check "Deny" for "Write" and "Write Extended Attributes"

This will prevent deleting and overwriting of PRESENT files but will still allow you to write NEW files to the directories.

Click Apply.

~

Also make sure the directories are read only by applying read only to the root directory and all subdirectories and files.

~

Test by deleting an image and hopefully it will not let you delete it.

To avoid having to change settings whenever u want to delete waste images, create a "transfer" directory above that directory structure and transfer your images from the camera to there and sort and then transfer for keeps to your protected directory?

I guess this is one solution. Hope it may be helpful to someone. :)
