Well - I knew the requests would come in for a "How To" explanation for my Negative Image entry. To be honest I am surprised it scored as well as it did. I didn't expect it to do much more than a high 5. I am sharing my steps in hopes that it doesn't irritate people. I know that the details are going to be far less impressive than what most people probably thought I did.
I have always liked the concept of a picture in a picture in a picture... I thought if there was a way I could do multiple pictures and have them flipping back and forth from negative to positive that it might have a cool effect. But i also know the challenge that I would have faced in keeping the light and colors the same throughout if I had taken a picture at a time, printed it out, framed it up and shoot again and then repeat the process several times over. THere would have been no consistency within the framed image.
So, what I did was take four or five different shots of Aidan holding an empty frame. I took them into PS, cropped them each to 8x10, and then proceeded to cut and paste each image into the next making sure I inverted every other image before pasting. If you look closely at my finished image you can see that there is an inverted and positive version of each pose (excpet the rotated one - that one was just as a goof). I don't remember how deep it actually goes (I think 5 pictures in). I then printed out that image as an 8x10 and framed it. I then set the pose up one last time with Aidan holding the frame with the finished picture inside. I made sure that the outside image was inverted so that when I inverted the final image they were still staggered properly.
In my final processing (which was all done in basic) I inverted and then did some basic selective color work, levels and curves, Neat IMage and sharpening and finally a desat of the cyans and blues. That final desat is what made the shot. The blues were just not very pleasing.
I did send it in to SC for a pre-validation. I knew that there could be some concerns over my taking a picture of a picture or the work that went into my initial print. But I also knew that the framed picture was obviously a framed picture, that I didn't shoot a print as the whole subject to bypass the rules, and that I did nothing in the edit of my final capture that would break the basic editing ruleset. Had I taken a picture of just my printed image and submitted it I know that would be illegal. But since it is just a part of my image - and a part that is obviously a framed image - I figured I was pretty safe.
I know that there has been some stink about past images that used a piece that was PS'ed, printed out and photographed as a major element of the final image, but personally I have no issue with that. We are creating images within certain guidelines. There are opportunities sometimes to think outside of the box but still stay well within the legal box when it comes to the creation of our work. Creativity comes in many forms. I hope you arent mad at my take. |

Even if it wasn't accepted, the creativity involved was nothing short of brilliant IMO. Thanks for sharing and congratulations on the ribbon.
Great job! |

Funny thing is I think it is far more powerful as a negative image.
When I look at the positive image I can see why you thought it wouldn't score that strongly - but inverting the image transforms it (for me anyway).
Still Cool

Obviously it does not meet the challenge since it is not totally negative. Go back in your box, think some more, then come out.
Just kidding, above. It was good, you watched too many HP comercials. What kind of printer did you use, HP?
Not-angry ------> :-)
