OMG!!

Is anyone else feeling the extreme highs and lows of finding such desire and inspiration coupled with feelings of ineptitude?

skill and stuff will both improve but right now it is sooo...

I have a d40, no lights, very limited lenses, and my computer is too slow for any real image editor.

OK - had to tell someone. I do want to take sum pitchers though!! :)

Well if you want to take some PITCHERS, then I suggest a Devil Rays baseball game.

If it is PICTURES you want to take. Slug away, don't worry about the foul, just get on base. Eventually, you will score home.

Just trying to be cute, sum pitchers, meant some pictures.

Anyway I do realize that it doesn't help my confidence level to look at Joey Lawrence portfolio. To name the latest one I have really closely studied.

Thank you for the response. :)

Joey, as talented as he is, has his own abilities, his own resources, his own support.

Like the line in 'Heart Break Ridge',... adapt, improvise, over come.

Just because you have meager resources doesn't mean that you can not over come your means.

Adapt a way that will benefit your current abilities, and improvise with the support that your currently have.

You don't need an expensive PS CS3 to get the job done, look at Gimp.

You don't need expensive strobes to get the job done, check out Home Depot, the poor mans lighting source.

You don't need a Hassleblad, or a 1ds Mark 3 to make beautiful art, it is not the equipment, it is the fore thought, the eye, and the execution.

Joey is a fine artist, and a good one to be inspired by, but there are hundreds of Joey Lawrences out there to be inspired by as well.

If'n youze r a'nead'n mor' th'n whut youze gawt, save yur munny, 'n by whut youze wunt's if'n dat's whut youze a'wuten 't dooo. (My chance to be cute as well)

I've got to say, I'm living the same frustration right now. My S.O. had recently purchased a D300 and I've been playing with the canon a570 that he got me for Christmas. Now I've been trying to play with his old D40 as well...and I swear, in my mind I'm seeing what I want to do...but I'm novice at best and very frustrated with SEEING things differently than I'm capable creating at this point. I'm going to just take a lot of pictures and be grateful that I'm able to learn my way through it all with DSLR as opposed to learning on film and making a lot of expensive mistakes. (like he did. ;))

True. I earn a reasonable income and am fortunate to be able to spend my way up. I have to be patient with my skill level. For instance last time I had PS I was overwhelmed and never really learned how to use it.

I am glad you understand me. I am in this exact boat. Even though I think I know all about ISO, Aperture, Shutter speed, etc I still feel very underwhelmed when I flip through my memory card. :)

I think we've all felt that. As to PS, I recently upgraded to the Gimp and got a bit of a feel for some of the basics - not without pain, but now I've found that the new Irfanview, with the addition of USM, is actually pretty good for my needs. I mean to say I went to the banquet but was quite content to return to my kitchen table. I also had a long moan about monitors, but that seems to have disappeared. (Got quite a collection of pitchers by the way. In my kitchen).
Funny: we think photography is about mastery/control, but of all the visual arts I think there is the least control, except in a studio situation.
