The title comes from a Native American (Navaho?) phrase meaning roughly "life/environment/earth out of balance." It is an array of images of the world both untouched and as influenced by mankind, with a long (repetitive) score by Phillip Glass and no actors or dialog. A lot of beautiful images .... |

Hopi.
It is interesting to hear from the word of the director why he did choose this title (first of a trilogy).
He criticizes our language for being limited to describe the life we live in.
And he chose this rare and probably disappeared language as a form of salute to a language which had that capability.

Winged Migration was one of the best productions I have ever seen. Saw it twice. Fabulous photography. Thanks for reminding me of Microcosmos. Must get that one of these days. |

Winged Migration was so beautiful, yet so repetetive. A lot of it was the same thing over and over, and I got bored, but still, ultimately one of the most beautiful films ever made.
I own the first two films of the 'Qatsi trilogy, just haven't had a chance to sit down and watch them. That's something I should do, since I bought them just before the third one came out, like what, two years ago? |

A friend has a cd titled Koyaanisqatsi by Philip Glass. Didn't know it was from a film, I'll have to check it out. |

If anyone is interested, here are IMDB links for the films in this trilogy:
Koyaanisqatsi (life out of balance)
Powaqqatsi (life in transformation)
Naqoyqatsi (life as war)
Another fantastic film in the same vein (indeed, the director was cinematographer for Koyaanisqatsi) is Baraka. |
