since i haven't seen this discussed in the forums (i used the search function) i thought i'd chime in: can you tell how many colors can your LCD really display? the reason i'm asking this is that most LCDs on the market nowadays have 6 bits per channel worth of color resolution: //www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=6+bit+vs+8+bit+lcd&aq=0&oq=6+bit+. they use dithering to approximate true-color resolution. why? 6 bits are faster to switch around than 8 bits and marketing loves fast response times.

now, i wonder how many graphic artists, photographers and designers around here fork out cash on expensive cameras with 14-bit per channel cmos sensors, 16-bit capable editing software and then edit the captures on a 6-bit LCD screen. also, i wonder how many of the innumerable "blown" or "too dark" or "too noisy" comments people get were caused by people voting on images displayed on these 6-bit LCDs. so "calibrate your monitor" should really be "get a decent monitor" instead?

here is a web page that has a few test images for your lcd: //www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

Very interesting!

I use the Eye One Gretagmacbeth color calibration tool on my system. I found that mostly my monitor is operating just about the best it can. But these tests not only helped reveal some of the limitations of my monitor, but it also helped me discover one setting I was able to correct (the clock/phase setting). The only test that proved rather disturbing to me, but not really a surprise (except for how bad it actually is), was the viewing angle test. The purple image did exactly what the author said it would do...

All good information. Thanks for sharing!

WOW, my $200 motor did pretty good. Yes, it is calibrated with Eye One Gretagmacbeth.
